Our Google Nest Mini disconnects from wifi quite often meaning the doorbell does not work. Is this a common problem? We only use the speaker for the doorbell.

Yes, this is a known issue. Google Nest Minis require a constant and stable Wi-Fi connection to stay linked to Google's cloud. If the Wi-Fi connection drops, the speaker will miss the announcement trigger from the doorbell.
Here is a list of troubleshooting steps that usually resolve this stability issue:
Prioritize 2.4 GHz: The Nest Mini works best on a 2.4 GHz network. It has a significantly better range and wall penetration than 5 GHz, which is essential if the speaker is not in the same room as the router.
Split the Wi-Fi Bands: If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under one name (Band Steering), the Nest Mini may struggle and drop connection while trying to switch between them. Access your router settings and create unique names for each band (e.g., "Home_2.4" and "Home_5"), then connect the Mini strictly to the 2.4 GHz network.
Check Placement: Ensure the Nest Mini is placed in close proximity to the router, with as few physical obstructions as possible, to maintain a strong signal.
Disable WPS: If "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" (WPS) is enabled on your router, it can sometimes cause authentication connection failures with smart home devices. Try disabling it in the router settings.
Router Device Limits: Some older routers or standard ISP routers have a maximum limit on concurrently connected devices. If you have many smart devices, the router might be forcing the speaker off the network.
Factory Reset: If the issue persists, perform a complete factory reset. Turn off the microphone (using the mute switch on the side), then press and hold the center of the speaker until you hear a sound confirming it is resetting. Set it up again from scratch.
Best of luck 😄
