Youtube TV App no longer working on Nest Hub

jkuhns
Community Member

Since early December, I can no longer play YTTV on my Nest Hub
When I say the command "Hey Google play CNN on YouTube TV" it says it doesn't know and here are some options of other... So I tried the YTTV app when you swipe up, and choose the apps.
The unit then says it doesn't know what to do... I have tried rebooting, dropping and readding, resetting, and nothing... Any ideas?

I have Spectrum internet service and I accidentally found that if I reset the modem via their web site and unplug then replug the Nest Display, it fixes the problem.

This has happened a few times and that seems to work every time.

Hi jkuhns,

I know how it feels when something isn’t working the way it should. Let’s further look into it. Can you cast from the YouTube TV app to your Google Nest Hub just fine? Let’s take some troubleshooting steps.

  • Open the Google Home app > Devices > Tap your Google Nest Hub > Settings > Remove device > Remove.
  • From the Devices tab, scroll down to Other Cast or Local Devices > Tap your Google Nest Hub > Add to a room. Follow the instructions in adding it back to your room.
  • Command it to play YouTube TV again.

Alex

Hello Alex, I tried your suggestion and to no avail.
I tried 'Hey Google play ABC on Youtube TV' and got the 'Im sorry I am unable to reach that or its unavailable' message. I also tried swiping up, more applications, and go directly to the YTTV app on the screen, and it responds, 'Im sorry, I don't know what to do'
Thank you, Jeff

Hi there,

Thanks for trying. Can you cast from the YouTube TV app to your Google Nest Hub?

Best,
Alex

Yes I can, that is not a problem.

I am having the same problem. It happened a few weeks ago, then fixed itself. It has started again.

Hello folks,

Sorry for the delays. Could you tell us the current firmware version of your Nest display? Please proceed with resetting your Google Nest Hub by pressing and holding both volume buttons together at the back of the Nest Hub for about 10 seconds. You'll hear your Google Assistant confirm that it's resetting the Nest Hub.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

I had already rest the device at least 3 times but I tried again to no avail.
1 thing to note - YouTubeTV DOES NOT show up in television to sync with google home - ONLY SLING does.
The App DOES show up in the listed apps on the hub, but when it is pressed the system fails.
Fuchsia Version: 14.20230831.4.72
Software Version: 54.103.7.577294944
Chromecast Firmware version: 3.71.387262

I feel like I am being patient, have called in, BOTH to YTTV AND GOOGLE HUB support and no one can fix this - now I am in the same endless loop on this site. I would think that this would be PRIORITY 1 to fix your OWN app/service

Hello Fridge,

Thank you for sharing the details with me. To further troubleshoot the issue, let's try setting up your device using a different account and observe if the behavior persists. Also, may I know which country you are located in?

I reset a Nest Hub per your instructions. It doesn’t care. YouTube TV still does not work. I have six Google Nest hubs and it doesn’t work on any of them so I believe the problem is at your end and has to do with the casting feature and its connection to YouTube TV.
Also, if I select the YouTube TV app directly on the Nest screen, I get "Sorry, I don't know where to play the video. Please give me the exact name of the screen."

The last time this happened I contacted YouTube TV directly and worked with them, and they said the problem was not with YouTube TV but with Google.

Here is my firmware info.

System firmware version: 14.20230831.4.72
Cast firmware: 3.71.387262

Well, after multiple posts and reports to Google via the Home app, the community forum, and the online form, my YouTube TV on my Nest Hub is finally functioning again tonight. Will see how long it lasts.

Same here - both the app and voice commands are working again. I am more frustrated that the communication on this has been horrible...

Yesterday I finally got a response to a post about this I put up almost two weeks ago and today it stopped working again! I think the problem is at Google's end and they haven't figured out how to solve it.

Working with Google tech is horrible; when I deal with Apple, I get someone who actually talks with me and then if she/he can't figure out the problem, sends me to a senior advisor. And they follow up via phone if the problem can't be solved then.

I shouldn't have to post on a Community Forum and wait for weeks to solve a problem.

It was working for me as of last night - will try again today.

It is still working today and was working yesterday - I am no longer having the issue, it does frustrate me that alphabet development is so cloak and dagger with their fixes...

Once again, I am broken - it started on Sunday.
Same exact scenario as before.  Can we please have a straight forward answer?

I have Spectrum internet service and I accidentally found that if I reset the modem via their web site and unplug then replug the Nest Display, it fixes the problem.

This has happened a few times and that seems to work every time.

I will give this a try - I am also a spectrum internet customer, so it is worth a shot... Thanks for the suggestion!

So this did work for me.
I am not sure why (I unplugged mine, waited 30 seconds and plugged it back in)
I did set my hub to a fixed IP in my eero router to see if that made any difference at all as well.
I am just not sure what would cause the unit to get confused (could a temporary reroute in the routing tables by Charter have caused it - cable companies do this if they have issues on a certain route...)

SLLN

Did setting the fixed IP on the EERO router work?
I am still having to restart my modem, which is a real nuisance. It works every time, but that shouldn't be the fix.

jkuhns

So far, I have not had any more issues (Fingers Crossed) - you might want to try it and see what your results are.

SLLN

Okay. Here is the latest. I had to restart the Spectrum modem several times a day. I called Eero and they thought it was my modem, so I called Spectrum. My modem was a 9 year old Arris and they replaced it with the latest one.
The casting problem is better, but not completely gone. Restarting the modem still fixes it. I think that Google "fixed" something at the end of last year that broke the casting feature.

I still am working no issue. I have not had to restart since we last exchanged messages on here. I had gotten a new modem last year sometime.

I finally set my Eero hubs to fixed IPs. Will see if I have further problems.

Although my YTTV has been working on my Hubs, the touch controls are gone as of a couple weeks ago (at least). More than a year ago I was able to swipe between channels, I tried to get google to fix that - it never worked again.

Nest Hubs are the only piece of tech I own that actually diminishes in function over its lifetime. Things that used to work seamlessly, no longer work at all.

Hi markmac95,

Thanks for reaching out. I apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing. We'll work together to identify the cause of the problem and find a solution. Could you tell us the troubleshooting steps that you already took? Also, could you provide us with your device's firmware version? Check out the steps below on how to get it:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Tap your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.

Regards,

Juni

I am experiencing the same issues trying to watch YouTube TV and also casting from Pixel phone to my Nest Hub. The problem with YouTube TV started in January 2024 and the casting issue began last week. I have tried ALL of the above suggestions and nothing has worked. Has Google removed these features from the device? So far, I don't have any problems using it to control lights. Pretty useless device for me. I am frustrated and disappointed because I use it in the kitchen. And, I am unhappy that I can no longer access My Cookbook.

My problem was casting within the Nest Hub. I didn't have any problems casting YouTube TV from my iPhone to my Hub. My problems started at the end of last year.

I finally figured out that it was a problem with my Spectrum cable modem and they upgraded it. Now it works most of the time. When it doesn't, I just restart the modem and that fixes the problem.

This morning, I was able to cast from my old Samsung tablet to the Hub. Why does the Samsung device work while Google devices will not? Still can't cast from my Pixel. Still can't watch YouTube TV directly from the Hub. My son did all of the network and wifi/modem stuff for me. Nothing fixed it.

SLLN

Did you reset your modem and unplug the Hub? That may work.

RTTN

Yes.  I unplugged, reset, restarted, removed device and added back to home. My son made sure all of the network settings were good. If something was off with the Hub or its settings, why was I able to cast from my Samsung tablet?
