"sorry that's not available for this account"

My kids are on managed Family accounts. They're added to the Home as members.

They're recognised and can run personalised routines, such as "Hey Google, good morning" for example.

I've checked and double-checked all the relevant restrictions around search and filters and digital wellbeing and on and on and on...

When the kids ask the Nest Hub something like "hey Google, show me a picture of a dinosaur" the get the response "sorry that's not available for this account"

This doesn't seem to be normal behaviour, from what I can gather, kids are meant to be able to interact with these displays.

I've checked and double-checked all the relevant restrictions around search and filters and digital wellbeing and on and on and on...

What do I need to do to enable my kids to be able to interact with this device?

Hi Extreme_One,

Thank you for posting in the community. I apologize that you're encountering troubles with the commands when your kids are trying to manage your Nest display. I understand how frustrating this can be. I'm sorry for the delayed response. Let's work together to find a solution.

To look for alternative options, please try to review and check the Assistant settings to manage their permissions. Also, you can explore removing them and adding them back again. Here are the steps:

  1. Connect the phone or tablet to the same Wi-Fi network as their display.

  2. On the child’s phone or tablet, open the Google Home app.

  3. Tap Settings, then Google Assistant, then Voice Match, and then Add devices.

  4. Select the shared devices they want to add their child’s voice to.

  5. Give parental consent. To give permission, sign in with the parent’s account and password.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to give consent or turn on the following:

  7. Web and App Activity (Optional)

  8. Voice Match

  9. Tap I Agree.

  10. Hand the device back to the child and help them teach Google Assistant to recognize their voice, then tap Done.

  11. To turn on Personal Results, tap I Agree. To leave it disabled, tap No Thanks.

Let me know how it goes and keep me posted.

Regards,

Byron

To clarify, the nest Hub does correctly recognise them.

It feels like the device has decided that as they're kids they can't do most of the things that a display enabled device is good at.

This is a clue:

Learn why the web might be turned off

Through the web, anyone can open content that may be blocked on a Smart Display by Digital Wellbeing settings or for a child's account. Your Smart Display blocks the web by default if:

  • A child's account is linked to it.

Hi Extreme_One,

Thank you for your response. I appreciate the clarification and detailed information.

As you found on the previous links provided. You can select options for the Assistant settings and Digital Wellbeing settings; however, to protect the security and privacy of the child's account, certain websites, videos, or personal results might be restricted.

We're always looking for improvements; please share your thoughts and experiences and submit them to the feedback form so it can address this concern in future updates.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Byron

When my kids ask something simple like "show me a picture of a dinosaur" they receive a message saying "sorry that's not available for this account"

That doesn't seem like "certain websites" are being blocked. That seems like they simply can't run that kind of query, which means they can't take advantage of the nest's display at all.

I've chosen the relevant content restrictions I feel are appropriate in the parental controls section of family link.

That should be enough. I see no reason why additional blocks are in place for the smart display.
