Google TV remote volume buttons no longer control soundbar following a factory reset

I changed one of the logged in accounts on my Chromecast/GoogleTV to be a supervised account and was forced to factory reset the device.

Following a factory reset, I attempted to set up the remote volume buttons with my Soundbar (IR Mode).

The soundbar is a Philips HTL2160.  On selecting Philips devices, the pairing process cycles through 5 codes. None of them work. It then flashes up a message of "it looks like I can't control this device".

The remote was previously paired and controlling the volume on this device before I performed a factory reset.

The Chromecast and remote both have the latest firmware.

Is there any way to retrieve and use the pairing code that the remote was previously using? Or any way for the remote to 'learn' the codes required?

If the volume buttons on your Google TV remote no longer control your soundbar after a factory reset, it’s likely due to the need to reconfigure the remote to control external devices. Follow these steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Re-pair the Google TV Remote

  1. Check Remote Pairing:
    • Navigate to Settings > Remotes & Accessories.
    • Select your Google TV remote and ensure it’s connected. If not, pair it again by following the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Reconfigure the Volume Control for the Soundbar

  1. Open Remote Setup:

    • Go to Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Select your remote > Set up remote buttons.
  2. Select Volume Control Device:

    • Choose the device you want the remote to control (e.g., Soundbar or Receiver).
    • The system will ask for your soundbar's brand.
  3. Follow the On-Screen Setup:

    • Enter your soundbar's brand when prompted.
    • The setup will test volume control. Follow the instructions to confirm the remote adjusts the soundbar's volume.

Step 3: Verify HDMI-CEC Settings

  1. Ensure HDMI-CEC is Enabled:

    • Go to Settings > Display & Sound > HDMI CEC.
    • Enable CEC control for connected devices. This allows the TV to send volume commands through HDMI to the soundbar.
  2. Check Your Soundbar's CEC Setting:

    • Make sure the soundbar’s CEC (e.g., Anynet+ for Samsung, Simplink for LG) is enabled.

Step 4: Troubleshooting Tips

  • Update Google TV Firmware:
    • Go to Settings > System > About > System Update and install the latest updates.
  • Restart Devices:
    • Restart both your Google TV device and soundbar to refresh connections.
  • Test Remote:
    • If volume control still doesn’t work, test the remote with another device to rule out hardware issues.

Step 5: Factory Reset as a Last Resort

If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, factory reset the Google TV device again and repeat the remote setup process carefully. Spotify++

Thanks for your pointless response. Please read posts before blindly replying to them with generic cop&paste responses.

As previously stated: I am trying to configure an Infra-red controlled soundbar that was previously working before the Google TV device forced me to perform a factory reset. It is not HDMI-CEC.

I have been through the reconfiguration process several times and the 5 available codes for my brand have been used up without success.

I have even tried to configure it under a different brand as suggested on other issues - but have still had no success.

The Chromecast and remote both have the latest firmware. The remote was controlling the soundbar volume minutes before I performed the factory reset.

Is there any way to retrieve and use the pairing code that the remote was previously using? Or any way for the remote to 'learn' the codes required? Or a system to file this as a bug report with Google? A further factory reset is unlikely to solve my issue.

Hello iainmc,

Thank you for taking an interest in our community. I understand that your Chromecast with Google TV no longer controls the soundbar after performing a factory reset. Do not be concerned; I’m happy to assist.

Here I have some recommendations:

Set up volume, input, and power

  • To start setup, turn on Chromecast at the top right of the TV screen and select profile settings.
  • If they haven’t added a device yet, you need to add one before they can continue.
  • Select Remotes and Accessories Under Chromecast remote setup, select Set up remote buttons. Add a device.
  • Select the device type and the device brand.

Volume

  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Remotes and Accessories.
  • Select Set up Remote Buttons.
  • Select Volume Control.
  • Choose from the available options:
  • Auto (CEC): The volume button on the Chromecast remote allows you to control the volume. Surround sound works with this setting. This setting won’t allow control of the volume using their phone, voice commands, or compatible displays.

Please let me know if these suggestions were helpful.

Regards,

Daniel

What is the point in posting issues in this forum if nobody actually reads them and just posts generic setup information?

As previously stated: I have been through the reconfiguration process several times and the 5 available IR codes for my brand have been used up without success.

I'm guessing the answer is no.
