It would be helpful if a Nest engineer would actually weigh in on this
problem, but my working theory is that some of the devices are not
connecting well with wifi and its drains searching for the signal

Same problem here. From a search of the threads it looks like this is a
common issue, and the threads keep getting locked with the suggestion to
use Energizer Lithium (with zero indication that was not being used).
