otherwise it would switch on and off constantly trying to maintain the

Check behind your wall, I had a similar setup to yours and was able to
locate an old blue C-wire buried beneath the dry wall, just connected it
and traced it back to the furnace control board and then connected it to
the C terminal there.
To also confuse matters further, if you search on Googles own website
for firmware updates on their nest tstats, still says 4th gen nest is at
version 1.0 from October of 2020, which I doubt is true.
