Sorted the problem. The email address I was trying to add was not a Gmail address, even though the user insisted that the address ended in gmail.com. I asked her to send me an email and you guessed it, it came from a different domain. What a waste of...

I did think of that but the response is so fast I doubt it is connecting to Google. In this case the address is a valid Gmail address. All very strange.

As an example I can add the following Gmail email address jhgrown but not jigrown and there are multiple other variations on the same theme.

The other person does have a Gmail account. I followed the link you suggested which clarifies how the dots are interpreted. However, by changing one letter of the email address before the @Gmail it won't work.
