In case you haven't seen it elsewhere, the Nest app is to be offed in
2022, with Home picking up its functions. The bugs and confusion are
fallout from this grand plan.

It's unlikely to fix the issue since I don't think it's hardware. As I
posted earlier, we did get ours working. But I don't know what of
several variables (settings, iPhone vs. Android phone) made the
difference.
I was added to the "home" that has the Nest Hubs (2nd gen). The home was
