Thanks so much, it worked!!  I should've thought about uninstalling these updates, which is a common tactic. Hopefully, after updates, the kid profiles should remain.

I accidentally factory reset my Chromecast (via button) and now I also cannot add kid profiles. I can add adult accounts but the kid-adding process fails at the very end, just as described. This is incredibly frustrating. P.S. That one button on the ...
