Solved it! So when adding additional sockets to the bg app it has an option to tether to another socket this is what Google home doesn't like, I removed sockets in the bg app one at a time and tried to link with Google home till it worked, turns out ...

the same message appears on a large number of different account providers

I am also having the same issue and no turning it on and off doesn't fix it.
