Cannot connect my nest app to google home app

Davehoughton
Community Member

I have recently installed and connected a 3rd gen learning thermostat using the nest app on my iPhone and all is working fine as a single user.

However, when i try to share the app with my wife I am directed to the goggle home app. I have installed the goggle home app and when I try to link to the nest app I select 'works with google' and search for Nest and the Nest app link appears but it will not accept my google account and password, even though I know both are correct and I use the same goggle account name and password for both apps.

The failure message in red reads:

" your email or password may be incorrect. You can try again"

 " if you're migrating your account or want to create a new one, sign in with Google."

There is no option to select or sign in with goggle and the reset password link does not work.

FYI I have also tried deleting nest app and factory reset the thermostat. I then tried to add the thermostat directly to the home app but the 3rd gen learning thermostat is not an option on the drop down list on the goggle home app.

So I am stuck with control of the 3rd gen learning thermostat on my iPhone with the nest app, but I cannot share it with my family or link it to the google home  home app.

There are multiple post on the various forums about this exact problem but there appears to be no solution or work around

Help !!!

@Davehoughton

Google Nest is using 2 apps for its Google Nest products and it causes confusion.

The Nest Learning Thermostat gets installed in the Google Nest app. Once it is installed there, it should AUTOMATICALLY appear in the same Google Nest "home/structure" in your Google Home app if you are logging onto both apps with the same Google (gmail) account.

You do NOT use "Works with Google" in the Google Home app to add the thermostat or to give someone access.

To give your wife access to the thermostat (and any other Google Nest devices), go to Settings | Household in the Google Home app and add her to your household for the same Google Nest "home/structure" where the thermostat is located; this will send an invite to her Google (gmail) account. Once she accepts the invitation, she should be able to see the thermostat in the Google Nest app and the Google Home app.

Thank you !!

Yes, the method above worked and we now have family access to the learning thermostat via Nest app.

I had not understood or appreciated the background integration between the Nest app and the google home app. I searched the instructions and set up guide and did not see this method or explanation.

I don't see the Nest learning Thermostat as a separate device within the Google home app but I can now see my home/structure which confirms that the background sync has worked automatically, as you say

Thanks again

@Davehoughton

Your Nest Learning Thermostat SHOULD show up in the same "room" in the same Google Nest "home/structure" on the Google Home app as on the Google Nest app.

Hello,

In the home app I see:
on the home screen: my home name and settings
In settings I see:
  Home information:  which contains my home address and nick name
  Household:  which contains people in the household
  Rooms and Groups:  is a blank screen with no options

@Davehoughton

We have cameras, doorbells, Nest Hubs, and a Nest Mini. All of our devices are in a "room". Maybe that doesn't happen with thermostats; I don't know because we don't have a thermostat. But the thermostat should show up in the Google Home app in the same basic way it shows up in the Google Nest app--in the same Google Nest "home/structure" (what you're calling a "nick name").  In our case, our name for our "home/structure" is our house number, and we see that house number in both apps.

Hey folks,

I want to check if you still need help. Don't hesitate to reach back if you do.

Thanks for the help here, MplsCustomer and Jeff.

Thanks JT,

I have resolved the original issue and can now control my Nest learning thermostat via the Nest App and I  have successfully invited others using the Google home app.

The only remaining question is: As stated in the previous thread I should be able to see the learning thermostat as a device in my household, on the google home app. However, the 'Rooms and Groups' page is blank. I am not sure if this is a problem and it is not causing me any issues but I would like to understand why I cannot see it there. I do not have other goggle devices as yet so I am happy using the Nest App but I want to know if I am using the home app correctly.

@Davehoughton

If you select your thermostat in the Google Nest app, under the "About" section there should be a "Where" setting. That SHOULD correspond to a "room" in the Google Home app. And your thermostat SHOULD appear in that "room" in the Google Home app.

I've seen posts from other customers in this forum where their thermostat hasn't appeared in the Google Home app. A few have tried this to force the 2 apps to sync. In the Google Nest app, click on the menu icon in the upper left corner, click on the "plus" icon in the upper right corner on the next screen, and add a temporary, empty "home'. Then in the Google Home app, select that temporary empty "home" from the drop-down at the top of the screen, select Settings, and select "Delete this home". For other customers, doing this has caused the "home" they had set up in the Google Nest app to appear in the Google Home app, along with the thermostat.

Hey Davehoughton,

Checking back in — have you tried the steps shared by MplsCustomer? If so, how did it go? Let me know if you need more help.

I appreciate the help here, MplsCustomer.

Thanks,

JT
