Google Home App Extremely Slow or Unusable

dtp23

I don't know what happened to the Google Home App but since 3-4 months ago the app has become completely unusable now. Its a crapshoot if anything works anymore. I don't think its a device or internet issue since I am on fiber internet. I tried using it on an iphone 15, iphone 17, ipad pro m4, macbook pro m4, all very capable devices and they all have the same problems.

  • Every 5th or 6th load the app freezes and i’m unable to do anything and would have to kill the app.
  • In my favorites tab i have all my cameras which will almost always get stuck on the indefinite loading state and never actually load.
  • When opening up a camera view, this is also stuck in an indefinite loading state that will load a live view once in a while. Scrolling back on the timeline is also hit and miss (mostly miss).
  • If the camera view and timeline load at all scrolling to specific will cause it to load indefinitely again.
  • Even loading something as simple as my thermostat will land me on a blank view half the time.

I’ve invested so much money into all the nest thermostats, cameras that it would be a big loss if i switch but at this point it’s ridiculous. I don’t need all the fancy AI features just the basic ability to view my live camera and timeline is good enough.

Just updated the app today. Same issues you’re having with no fix.

@tcooper_31 i think i found the solution. I had the Home Premium Standard, soon as I changed my plan to the Home Premium Advanced all the performance problems magically went away. Having the cameras the Home Premium Standard and free tier is basically useless.

Well, you’re lucky because I been had the google home premium advance for over a year now and Ben having this problem since new years with no fix.

I celebrated too early. I upgraded to premium and it worked great for 2 days and then reverted back to all the same issues. 🤦‍♂️

I been having the same problem since last week right after new years and also have around 10 cameras and a thermostat and also fell like it’s definitely the app problem since I have cameras in 2 completely different locations using different internet and no internet problem and everything worked fine for 2 years on the same Internet for that time. I  have to close and reopen the app after loading a video every time because if I would like to load a different video on a different camera it just either loads for ever and gives a message that a problem occurred or just freezes and it’s the same thing over and over again. I have the google premium advance package as well for the whole time I had the nest products.

Exact same thing is happening here. It seems to happen for me specifically when using linked devices. For example, loading a brand new Google nest cam outdoor works great, but the moment I try to load an original Nest cam IQ (even one that’s been transferred to the Google home app), the entire app goes into a forever load state until the Wi-Fi is changed or the app is restarted.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I understand you have been dealing with significant instability in the Google Home app over the last few months, specifically regarding app freezes, cameras stuck on indefinite loading, and timeline playback failing. I've noted that you have already isolated this across multiple troubleshooting steps, and I'm glad to help.

To help us investigate further, could you please answer the following questions:

  • Which version of the Google Home app are you currently using?

  • Are all your devices (iPhone, iPad, MacBook) running the latest software updates?

  • Are all your devices connected to the same WiFi network?

  • Does the issue also happen if you try using mobile data or another WiFi network?

  • Are there any error messages displayed when the app freezes?

  • Have you tried opening the Google Home app using an Android phone?

Once I have that information, we can proceed with the next steps.

Regards,

Gabriela

Thanks I’ll try to give as much as I can

im on iPhone 17 with google home app running 4.5.53

I have a tp link mesh network but I’ve tried lot of different settings. Latest includes a dedicated 2.4 iot channel.

nothing seems to work well both on WiFi and on cellular so guesses its a WiFi or app issue.

no error, for me- what’s odd is initially I can boot and load the thermostat for example but if I try to change temp or turn it on it basically freezes and nothing happens. I can exit but when going back in I get a blank screen

let me know what other info I can provide

iPhone 17, iOS 26.2, Google Home 4.6.53

iPhone 15, iOS 26.2, Google Home 4.6.53

iPad Pro M4,  iPadOS 26.0.1, Google Home 4.6.53

All devices are on same wifi network. Issue happens when i'm on my work wifi also.

There isn't any error message, the app just loads indefinitely or freezes, even loading basic things like lights or thermostats goes into a blank screen.

problem still occurring with no fix  2 weeks now

iPhone 14plus iOS 26.2

iPhone 15plus iOS 18.6.2

google home 4.6.53

Devices connected in 2 Different homes with 2 different WiFi’s

Tried the app on cell data with WiFi off on both phones no fix.

Tried the app on 3 difference WiFi networks also tried connecting to 2.4g WiFi straight no fix.

All devices in one house connected to 2.4 WiFi straight from router, other house 2 devices connected to 2.4 straight from router and 2 from a  wired AP tp link extender.

I don’t have an android to trie it on all apple products .

no error message just once when tried loading a video and waited for ever for it to load a message came up saying a problem occurred.

experiencing the same problem as everyone else even the thermostat once going on it in app and changing the temperature the temperature dosnt show it changed and the thermostat screen goes blank on phone app, only am able to change temperature when closing the app and reopening it again and going straight to thermostat and changing the temperature but then trying to do another change it will go blank again. The cameras show live view but when trying to go and playback video in history if a video take time to load all the other cameras go black on the app and just a loading circle appears on all of them and I have to close the app again and reopen it to make the app work again and be able to see anything on the cameras or thermostat. I noticed once something starts to take a little of time to load the app just runs slow freezes up and nothing works thermostat goes blank cameras go black with loading circle.

Hi Gabriela,

I am having the same issue as everyone else.  I initially see my Fav cameras; but as soon as I try to toggle to all cameras tab, app goes into a tailspin.

Specs:

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • IOS v. 26.2 (latest)
  • Google Home v. 4.6.53
  • Verizon FIOS Gig connection (router with 2 extenders)
  • Google Home works on other devices in house (iPhone 13, desktop in browser, older iPad)
  • No error message; just indefinite loading spin

I have also cleared cache, uninstalled the app, shut down phone and reinstalled the app about 4 times.

Hi Gabriela,

Is there any update on this based on the info provided?

Thanks in advance.

The iOS and iPad apps are pretty much unusable. The only client thats usable is the web version.

I didn’t know there is a web version how do I get on that?

Same issues as you all have reported.

iPhone 17 Pro - 26.2 IOS

iPad 2nd gen Pro - 26.2 IOS

G Home 4.6.53 - premium advanced sub

ATT 1Gig

Commercial grade routing and APs.

home.google.com works fine, the app however is completely unusable.  Cameras just spin constantly after the first ten to fifteen seconds of loading the app.  Reloaded app, cleared cache, no joy.  What am I paying monthly for?

I’ve been using the mobile web app instead of the native app it’s actually works. You can actually watch the video feed and control the thermostat.

This was great advice.  Mine doesn't open with live feed automatically (all say "camera idle").

Do you know if that is a setting I can change?
