Google Home Public Preview - Unable to join error message

Anthony
Community Member

Finally it gives me the option to join the public preview. When I click the join pop up I initially got this message "Something went wrong with Public Preview acceptance".

But I could see the option to join in the notification tab. When I go to the screen that says "Your app will soon update to the public preview" with the join button on the bottom. When I click the join button I'm getting a "unable to save settings" error message.

What is wrong?

Hi folks,

I hope everyone is doing well. We received an update from the team - they've suggested checking your Google Groups settings to make sure the Public Preview invitation process can work properly. Could you try the steps below and please let us know if it helps?

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. At the top right, click Settingsand thenGlobal settings.
  3. Check Add me to their groups.
  4. Click Save.

Looking forward to your responses.

Thanks,

Juni

Me too, have for weeks. Sent feedback with details, no reply. Rebooted, changed all settings, withdrew preview, re-applied. Just installed Android 12 OS update, still the same "Unable to save settings."

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting in the Community and I'm sorry for the late response. Could you try using another mobile device for us to isolate the issue? Keep me posted.

Best,

Nikki

Hello Nikki,

I have tried on a completely different device, setup from scratch, but the result is the same.

Seems the issue is tired to the Google account, not the device.

Sincere regards,

Ryan

Hi rcarmichael,

Thanks for taking those steps. Just wanted to confirm that everyone is using a regular Gmail account? Also, for us to isolate more of this, could you try creating a new Gmail account then try joining the preview program? For us to check if it is an account that we are having issues with.

Best,

Nikki

My account is a regular Gmail account.

I have just requested the preview from another account, and will attempt to accept when given the option.

Hi rcarmichael,

Sure thing. Keep me posted.

Best,

Nikki

Wait? You want us to all wait until this new account he created get accepted into the preview program. Which could take days to weeks before he gets accepted. Just to validate if a new email address is having the same problem?

You have better access to the development team then we do. Why don't you create a new email and have them add you to the pilot program and test it?

I've seen this being an issue on every feedback forum available. (Here, Reddit, twitter) This can't be an isolated problem. This is still happening right now. There isn't a faster way to test this?

The second account just got accepted and works correctly.

Strangely, switching back to my main account (and even removing the second account) keeps the preview on for the main account.

Spoke too soon I'm afraid. My main account is back to standard, displaying the error message "unable to save settings" when trying to "join public preview".

This has proven (like I originally theorised) that the issue is with individual Google accounts, and in no way related to the device the app is installed on.

Please advise.

Ryan

just what do you mean by regular gmail account?

I get it that you mean a Google Id, but what would non-regular be? For me, it fails on what I would presume is a 'regular' account.

There are numerous posts indicating the various devices on which this fails. Individuals who volunteer to be part of the public preview don't all have multiple working devices.

The way to start tracing this is to look at the code that presents the message "Unable to save settings" and then trace back to see what functions call that function.

That is what is needed, we have all the evidence that is needed to start debugging the issue.

My guess is that no Google software engineer has actually bothered to look at the issue.

If they had, they would have either fixed it, or have specific questions that are not already answered in this thread, or submitted the fix and we are awaiting to get the fix, in which case this thread should then be marked as being fixed in a specific version.

By the amount of people that experience this problem you can't think this is a phone type problem!

See other replies to this answer aswel.

But to confirm, I tried on :

Samsung galaxy s20+

Samsung galaxy s20

Samsung A52s

Samsung Tab S7 FE

Samsung tab A

Samsung tab A7

The suggestion from @Juni  above, worked a treat for me.

This appears to be common (after viewing this thread). I tried 1) Clearing App Cache on my Pixel 7 Pro and 2) Deleting an out of date Google Home version on my very old iPad, thinking there was a bad interaction.  Neither helped. I have also tried to decline and reapply to Preview Program.

exactly the same here on Pixel 4a Android 13

Same here since November 2022.... Pixel 7.

My wife as the same phone , and she have the public preview On....

Does anyone else have develope mode on? I do on pixel 7 pro - any chance that's the issue?

Same problem and phone, no dev mode. 😟

I'm also having this problem. I have two Google accounts configured on my phone. Is anybody having this problem with only one Google account on their phone?

Only one account on mine 😞

One account only , no dev option , still not working. Wife phone same setup , same phone (pixel 7 ) and it's work ... 🤦‍♂️

Google Home is pure garbage. The app has barely worked and when is there ever not an issue with any Google product? Lol. I've got the same issue.

Hoping for the best with the overhaul. Let's try to keep this thread positive.

Hard to keep positive when all Google products has more bugs than a dirty apartment with no fixes in tow.

Same issue here.

Honestly, at this point we can only hope for a full release of the Google home new interface update soon. It's been more than a month and the same problem since day one ...

Sounds mean but, in the interests of Google and their customers, I hope the people who designed the UI for the wifi section of Google Home, & Youtube Music are part of the big layoffs this week. Then again, I suspect the people responsible were probably interns with zero experience, yet somewhere, somehow, some manager signed off on it.

Still happening at the end of May, 2023.

Same problem on 2 different phones; rooted Note9 and un-rooted, stock, Fold 4

Similar issue for me on iOS. I initially got a "something went wrong with Public Preview acceptance" error, and now when I go to settings > preview and click the join button nothing happens.

Yeah it doesn't seem device matters. Even broke out my old iPhone and it has the same issue. Not great.
