Home app automatically changing default music service

Short version - Every time I set the Music setting in my Google Home app to "No default provider," a few hours later the app automatically reverts this selection to "Youtube Music" (and I don't have a Youtube Music account.) Is there some other setting in some other account setup that would be causing this?

Details: I am the primary on my Google Home account. I added my wife as a household member. We each have our own separate Spotify accounts. We want my wife's account to be the one that Google uses when we ask our smart speakers to play music. We have linked my wife's Spotify account via her Google Home app. On my app, I have selected "No Default Provider" in the Music settings. As expected, when we say "OK Google, play [artist name,]" it will play that artist via my wife's Spotify account. However, after a few hours or days (timelines vary,) my Google Home app inevitably changes my selection from "No Default Provider" to "Youtube Music." I don't have a Youtube Music account, meaning that any time we ask it to play music, the app responds saying that Youtube Music isn't set up.

Hi there,

Sorry for the late reply.

In terms of factory resetting, I would suggest trying to reset the Google devices that you have. However, there is a Blog post that may be a cause of some of the issues with this.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Hey there,
Sorry for the late response, but I wanted to drop in here to help.

I understand that this can be confusing but I definitely wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Just wanted to double check to see if you were still needing help on this? If so, what troubleshooting steps have you tried?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Garrett DS

Hey Garrett, sorry for the delayed response. I am still having the issue. I haven't done any troubleshooting steps - every time I search for anything regarding Google Home changing default music service, it just shows me how to change the default myself. Every time I do that (i.e. set it to "No default provider",) the system changes it back to YouTube Music within a day. Let me know what steps I should follow.

Thanks,

Jeff

Nope, not helpful. I'm doing exactly what it says, and it changes my selection. Here's what's happening.

1) I am the primary on the Google Home account. I have invited my wife to the household.

2) I do not have a Spotify account. My wife does. We linked my wife's spotify account to her Google Home account.

3) We would like our smart speakers to use my wife's Spotify account as the default music provider. In my wife's Google Home app, we set her linked Spotify account as the default.

4) In my account, I set the Music setting to "No default provider," which is supposed to use other accounts' preferences on shared devices.

5) For a few hours after I update my settings to "No default provider," everything works as desired. We request music via a Google Home Mini, and the system plays it from my wife's Spotify account. However, after a few hours, my Google Home account automatically changes my Music setting from "No default provider" to Youtube Music. I don't have a Youtube Music account. Therefore, when we request music via our smart speakers, the system says that it cannot complete the request because we don't have a Youtube Music account linked.

Hey there,

Thanks for the detailed information. When you request music through the device, you still have "No default provider" selected correct?

Please try the following steps:

In the Google Home app

  1. Tap settings
  2. Scroll down and under Google Assistant settings tap More Settings
  3. Services tab
  4. Music

If that still doesn't work, you can try to do a factory reset on the device or uninstall and reinstall the app.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Tried the path you sent, brings me to the same setting page. In regards to your question about what the setting is when I request music, I don't check before requesting music every time. If I have recently reset the setting, it works. After a while it changes itself to YouTube Music, without me doing anything.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Home app on my device, and the issue repeated itself a few hours later.

In terms of a factory reset, are you suggesting I reset my phone? My Google smart devices? I have 2 minis, 2 Chromecast, plus 3 Sonos speakers. What do you suggest I reset?

Hey Garrett,

Thanks for checking in. I haven't had a chance to reset everything yet, need to carve out a few hours to knock it all out. Feel free to close - if I still have issues I can start another thread.

Thanks,

Jeff
