Improve Google Assistant to Stop Premature Speech Cutoffs and Better Handle Natural Pauses

First, I used AI to write this based off a communication thread I had trying to improve the issue.

I would like to share feedback regarding an ongoing issue with Google Assistant cutting me off before I finish speaking, even when I pause very briefly. This aggressive timeout makes it difficult to have natural, thoughtful conversations or use the Assistant for longer tasks like journaling, where space to pause and reflect is essential.

Additionally, the current behavior indirectly encourages the use of filler words like “um” or “uh” to keep the Assistant listening, which conflicts with best practices taught in speech classes and professional communication. It would be much better if the Assistant’s AI could be improved to recognize and respect natural speech patterns and pauses without requiring continuous talking or filler words.

This issue has a tangible impact on user experience, especially for people who need to speak thoughtfully and clearly. Improving pause detection and speech recognition to accommodate natural, clear, and unhurried speech would greatly enhance usability, reduce frustration, and support a wider range of speaking styles.

Thank you for your ongoing efforts to improve Google Assistant. I look forward to seeing these important enhancements in future updates

Hello @ChastityP,

Thank you for posting in the community and for providing this detailed feedback. I am sorry to hear about your experience with Google Assistant cutting you off before you're finished speaking. I completely understand how frustrating that can be, especially when you are trying to have a natural conversation or need time to reflect.

Your insights are very valuable, and I want to assure you that feedback like this is essential for our product teams as they work to improve the usability and performance of Google Assistant.

Since this is a feature request and not a technical issue, the best way to ensure your feedback is seen by the right team is to send it directly through the Google Assistant.

You can submit your feedback in one of the following ways:

  • From your device: You can tell Google Assistant, "Hey Google, send feedback."

  • Through the Google Home app:

  • Open the Google Home app on your phone.
  • Tap on your profile picture at the top right.
  • Select Help & feedback.
  • Choose Send feedback and describe your experience in detail.

I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts, and your feedback will help improve the user experience for everyone.

Regards,

Kevin
