Matter with Nanoleaf

kcroyaljosh
Community Member

I can’t get matter Nanoleaf device to connect via google home app. I followed all the directions from both Nanoleaf and Google Home and it does not work. The instructions from Google Home aren’t even correct anymore. I know the lights work because I connected it prior to the thread board router on my Alexa. i’m trying to hook up a different light on a different net work at a different house.

Your Google device might be incompatible.
If you want To control a Matter-enabled device with the Google Home app or Google Assistant, you need a Google device that acts as a hub for Matter. Many Google devices have received software updates so they can work as a hub for Matter:

  • Speakers: Google Home, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio
  • Displays: Nest Hub (1st gen), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max
  • Wi-Fi routers: Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E)

If you want to connect matter via thread The only devices that have a thread border router are as stated by google

The following Google devices can act as a Thread border router with Google Home:

  • Displays: Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max
  • Wi-Fi routers:  Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E)

OM

I have nest hub max and the nest wifi pro.

Hello kcroyaljosh,

Thanks for posting here in the Community.

A few questions: what's the Nanoleaf device that you have? Were you able to get this connected to Google Home before? What's the Google Home app version that you're using?

Please check if you can link your Nanoleaf lights using these steps: open the app > Choose Settings > Tap on Works with Google > Look for Nanoleaf > Sign in and follow the steps to connect your devices. Ask your Google Home to "sync the devices" and check if you can now control Nanoleaf.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Lovely

I have done this, doesn’t make the light work with google home. Need iOS to work with matter and google home.

Hello Jimbo9,

Please ensure that your Google Home app is up-to-date. Check your Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) and make sure that it has the latest production firmware version. Follow the steps in this article and let me know if the app is still not detecting your Nanoleaf light bulb.

Best,
Lovely

Hi, and thanks for replying.
Yes, the Home and Nest Hub are up to date.
The article you sent me to is for Matter-enabled devices, and Home didn't find one. I know that the essentials Nanoleaf light bulb is Thread enabled, but maybe not Matter(?). The QR codes that came with the light gave a "not a Matter QR code" error when trying to follow the steps on that article.
FYI this is what shows on the Nanoleaf app:

Network Name
NEST-PAN-4D21

Channel
14

PAN ID
4D21

Extended PAN ID
1ECD31118ECF332

None of this information seems to help the Nanoleaf see my network...

I am just joining this thread, as I also have a Nanoleaf essential bulb. It is advertised as "worrks with Google Home", but I cannot connect it to Home. I've been told (long after purchase) that I need a thread border router. And that the Home Nest Gen 2 can act as a thread border router. How do I make that work??? The bulb shows the Nest in it's "thread" heading---but they do not connect!

Hey folks,

@SlyGryphon, thanks for sharing what worked for you.

@Jimbo9, if your Nanoleaf light bulb is now Matter-enabled, set it up in the Nanoleaf app first and make sure it's working there. Link it in the Google Home app afterwards using this guide: open the Google Home app > Tap Devices > Select Add > Choose Works with Google > Look for Nanoleaf and sign in > To complete the setup, follow the in-app steps. Check out this article for more information.

Keep me in the loop.

Regards,
Lovely

Firstly, I don't think this is matter enabled. The packaging does not mention matter (tho how do I absolutely confirm???)

All the other steps have been followed multiple times and they DON'T work!
How do I confirm that the Google Home Nest Gen2 is actually operating its thread network? There doesn't seem to be any way to confirm that it is operating.
For a couple of weeks the light showed:
Network Name:NEST-PAN-4D21

Channel: 14

PAN ID: 4d21

Extended PAN ID: 1ECD31D118ECF332

But still wouldn't connect.
However, now it doesn't even show a network.

I have the nanoleaf essentials  that only connects to matter. I already synced the account. I was able to see the device with matter. I need Alexa devices. I’m using the public preview of the iOS app.

Hey kcroyaljosh,

To confirm, do you have a Google Home/Nest device? Please note that to control a Matter-enabled device with the Google Home app or Google Assistant, you need a Google device that acts as a hub for Matter. Visit this link to know more.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi kcroyaljosh,

I don't know if this will help, but I had a lot of trouble pairing my first Nanoleaf Matter bulb with Google Home.

I tried a lot of different things, so not sure if this was what fixed it, but it started working after I added the empty Nanoleaf connection to Google Home app.

In Google Home, I did Add > Works with Google > Nanoleaf Smarter Series. I think this is the cloud integration with Nanoleaf, i.e. for older dervices. It didn't do anything (because I have no cloud devices), but afterwards I was able to add the Matter bulb. Maybe it set up some initial values or something?

It could have been coincidence, but was based on this thread which said to relink accounts https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Home-Automation/Devices-controlled-with-thread-are-always-off...

Previous to that I had tried several times and ways to add the Matter bulb to Google Home. I could get Bluetooth control working in the Nanoleaf app, and the app could see my Google Thread network (PAN, etc). When pairing it would connect to the device, and generate credentials, but then timeout waiting for it to connect. I tried several times, including hard resetting the light, etc.

My environment:

* Android Google Home 3.2.1.7 (preview = on)
* Google Nest Hub Max, system firmware 10.20221207.2.120 (preview = on)
* Nanoleaf Android app, 9.0.6 (313) (beta = yes)
* Essentials Matter A60/E27, firware updated 3.5.10

The other thing I had recently changed was that I have two Nest Hub Max, and had turned on of them off to avoid confusion.

That being said, the Nanoleaf is now appearing as offline in Google Home, although if I open it > Settings > Technical Information then it takes a while, but does eventually display the information.

The other Matter device I have, an Eve Energy, is also reporting as offine.

I did a reboot on the closest Hub Max, and now the Nanoleaf is showing up in Google Home (but not the Eve)

Best of luck!

Hi SlyGryphon (and others),

Mine, at least, is different to your situation. I don't think my Nanoleaf essentials bulb is a Matter enabled one. Pretty sure it is just thread. As mentioned above, when I tried to add it, the app said that the QR code that came with the bulb, was NOT a Matter one.

So, I still am unable to add this device to Google Home---even though the box says "Works with Google Home"!
