Migration to a google account failed, but google account is linked to Nest now

Jason92127

I put off migration for a long time, and just tried to today.

First I couldn't use my primary google apps account, so I used my backup gmail account.  Then the migration failed, but still linked my account to Nest so I can't try migration again.

I'm not going to create a 3rd google account and I don't want to manually move all the devices over to the new Nest account.

Is there any way to fix this mess?  Maybe I'll never migrate and I'll replace the Nest devices with something else.

I don't know what you mean by "the migration failed, but still linked my account to Nest".

Perhaps this Google Nest topic will help:

There was a dialog box that said migration failed and to try again later. After that I tried to login with my gmail account and it created a new account. So now I’m stuck.

Review the Google Nest Help topic on migration issues.  They address many scenarios.

Hello jason92127,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with this. No worries; we'll check this out. For the migration process, you need to use a Gmail account that is not linked to any Nest account. Probably the backup Gmail account that you used for the migration has already been registered as a Nest account. To check if backup Gmail is already used as a Nest account, you can go to https://goo.gle/2qjvVSU and select Sign in with Google. Once you sign in and we direct you to the main page with the name of your home with a plus sign in the middle, that means it's already registered and cannot be used for migration.

Thanks for the help, @MplsCustomer.

I look forward to your response.

Best,
Edmond

That Gmail account got linked to Nest as part of the failed migration, is there no way to unlink it?

Hi there,

I’m sorry for the late response. Once you log in to the Nest app or the Web app with a new Gmail and are able to log in, there is no way to unlink. But I just want to verify your original account. Have you tried signing up at https://goo.gle/2qjvVSU? There are two options there to sign in on the sign-in page, which are Sign in with Google and Sign in with Nest. Which of these two options did you select to sign in?

I look forward to your response.

Regards,
Edmond

I’m probably just never going to migrate, it was annoying enough that I couldn’t use my main Google apps account.  I’ll do without the integrations that I was used to until I get around to replacing my Nest devices.

Hi there,

I genuinely understand the inconvenience you have faced. There are advantages to migrating your account to Google, especially if you have a Nest camera or doorbell. One of which is that you can get the 2nd generation Nest Aware subscription, which will cover all of your Nest cameras and save you more money. One account to sign into both the Nest and Google Home apps. Your homes and home members will be aligned across the Nest and Google Home apps.

Here is a link to FAQs about accounts for the Nest app

My Google Wifi is already setup on my main Google apps account so even if the migration didn’t fail Nest wouldn’t have been signed with Google home.

If there was a way to manually move them to a Nest account that uses my main Google apps account I might try it, but I guess that would require taking each of the Protect smoke detector down to scan them? Taking the doorbell camera off the wall?

Such a pain, especially since it was working good before.  I’d really like it all controlled by Home Kit if I was going to do all that.

Google Nest's help topic on migration has a section on what to do if the "Google Account is already linked with another Nest account". It does require removing all of your devices from the Google Nest app and then reinstalling them, using the steps below:

Use the Google Account that's linked to another Nest account:

1. Sign in to the Nest app with your Nest account.
2. Disconnect all your devices.
3. Sign out of the Nest app.
4. Select "Sign in with Google" to sign in with the linked Google Account.
5. Reconnect your devices.

Even if I was going to do the migration manually I can’t use the same account as my Google Wifi.  Will this ever be corrected?

This whole situation is a mess

Oh, your "main Google apps account" is actually a Google Workspace (G Suite) account; I didn't realize that. I don't know if Google Nest has any plans to let Google Workspace accounts work with Google Nest; I don't know why.

Hey folks,

@Jason92127o, some Google Home app features are not available for Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) accounts. To access all Google Home app features available in your country, link a personal Gmail account instead.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Best,
