Need help renaming device

We have two older displays (not smart TVs) to which we can successfully cast using Chromecast. However, we need to change the names of the devices. All directions I can find on the internet refer to settings on the Home app we do not have. My app does not look like my husband's. We have Pixel 7s, both bought the same day, and our Google Home apps are both updated November 2024. Neither of us can understand why our apps look so different.

Instructions to rename I have seen are to tap and hold on the device's tile, then go to settings. I assume this means click on the Devices tab, then hold on the device's name. When we do this, a page for the device comes up with Request invite to home and Cast my screen. The little three dots at the top right only offer Help and Feedback--no settings option.

If I click on the Settings tab, the devices don't show at all (though they do on my husband's version of the app). I have Services, Home features, Nest services & support, and Delete this home. No options for rooms, etc.

I just hate it when the instructions don't match the app for which they are written.

Any suggestions, anyone? I have already uninstalled and reinstalled my Google Home app.

Thanks,

From what you've described it sounds as though the TVs will be under the "local devices" section in your Google Home app. This means you're connected to the same Wi-Fi network as that device but you're not a member of the home that it's been added to in the Google Home app.

Short term, I'd ask your husband to follow the steps you've read to rename them, as I assume he is the one who set them up and will be able to see those settings.

To fix this permanently, whoever setup your home structure in the app needs to invite you to the home. You'll then be able to see all settings etc.

Hi, David.

I finally got everything working.I uninstalled my Home app to eliminate any conflicts.
On my husband's phone, I added the local device to a room, which allowed me to rename it to more accurately describe its location.
Once his app was set up correctly, I joined his Home and everything is now peachy.

Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks, David. We are out for the day, but we're will take a look at this when we get home. Though, my husband has no luck renaming them either.
