Nest Thermostat Gen 1

My nest Gen1 thermostat works fine except the nest cell phone and laptop app will not allow adjustment of the temperature like it has allways done. All I can do remotely is set home or away modes. The thermostat is connected to WiFi (The thermostat shows which wifi network is connected) as is the cell phone and laptop. I have reset the thermostat by selecting the nest reset mode with no difference in results.

Has Nest changed the app to not support Gen 1 devices?

As a last attemp to return to remote adjustments I would like to try to uninstall and reinstall the nest app but Gen1 devices do not have a bar code or a device ID they just have a serial number. Is there a way to use just the serial number in the nest app?
