News preferences being ignored

Sooji
Community Member

I noticed my morning routine started out per usual but my news sources went from Reuters (one I allow) to suddenly playing Fox News (something I very intentionally do not allow). It happened yesterday and again today. I believe there's a bug related to preferred news sources.

Removing and resubmitting preferred news sources did not fix this issue. I noticed other reddit users also have this issue but didn't see a thread here:

Hey folks,

Chiming in to ensure everything is covered here. I appreciate @JillG's efforts in updating this thread.

Rest assured that our team is aware of this, and looking into this issue at hand. Just an added questions - are you having this issue via routine or directly from your speaker/display? Also, make sure to send feedback via voice command on your Google Home/Nest devices by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback," followed by the keywords: "GHT3 Community Play news from incorrect news sources." Visit this link to learn more.

It is best to send feedback after you experience the issue, so I suggest replicating it first. Also, make sure that device reports are enabled on your devices.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right corner of the screen, tap Settings > Recognition & sharing.
  5. Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)

Note: I'll pin this as a "Solution" so all users having this issue will see my response first.

I'll get back on this thread once I have more information to share.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi @Sooji

I empathize..ugh.

I will escalate your post and that reddit link to the Community Specialists for visibility on this issue with the news sources.

In the meantime try clearing the app cache to the Google and the Google Home apps.

Try asking for "my news" and see if that helps. Another of our volunteer experts here is experiencing exactly the same issue and found that to be a workaround.

I've escalated this and will keep you updated if I hear anything back.

Thanks Jill. I'll give this a shot tonight and let you know. I got fox news again this morning unfortunately.

EDIT: No luck unfortunately with "my news"

Oh this worked for me! Thanks

Our Community Specialist asked if you could clear the sources again to see if that helps-- I realize you may have already done this-

  1. Open the Google Home app.

  2. At the top-right, tap the account icon.
  3. Tap Assistant Settings > News

  4. Choose Add news sources to select additional news providers, or tap  to remove existing news providers.
  5. Make sure all apps are updated.

Thanks Jill, no luck.

To be clear what I'm doing, I just ask my google home "Hey Google, play my news" or "Hey Google, good morning" and listen. In the past, it'd play ABC news and then Reuters. It now plays Reuters into Fox News.

My google home max and my next audio no longer are playing the news from my preferred sources list, they're playing from what I assume is the default list. I've checked my settings on the google home app and they haven't changed. Any ideas?

Same thing happening to me. I've tried all the suggestions and they do no resolve the problem.

I have been having the same issue as everyone else with my morning routine/news on the home speaker. The routine runs through fine, with my preferred news sources when I use the Google Assistant app on my phone or iPad. Hope the issue will be fixed for speaker soon!

Hi Azarco,
I'm still getting incorrect news sources playing in good morning routine and when I ask for the latest news. I have been Sending Feedback exactly as suggested in @Muddi's post.
Thanks,
Benjamin

Same exact thing for me.  Very annoying.

Same here, Reuters and fox News replaced my set sources.

For a work around I ask for the news source by name. 🙄

Boo1
Community Member

I can’t make that work either, it just plays news about that outlet. Or a playlist from Spotify related to some of the words in the name. 😩

Replay
Community Member

Try Saying "OK Google, CNN news" - replace "CNN" with your fav news source- No need to say "play" as that word most of the time plays something on Spotify!

Boo1

Good point! Unfortunately it then seems to treat it as a search and looks for news about them, not playing their news…

Thanks! I have replicated the issue and sent the feedback phrase as suggested.

"Are you having this issue via routine or directly from your speaker/display?"

Both! I get the same issue with the voice command "Hey Google, good morning" and "Hey Google, what's the news?'

I have a Mini Gen 1 that is playing the wrong news, both raw and routine.
After rebooting etc it changed and behaved as expected. After a few hours it went back to playing the wrong news. By asking to “Play my news” it was OK. 30 minutes later tried again and to “Play my news” it told me it was “… resuming the news.. “  and then played a 2 second bit of static and stopped. A few minutes later to the same instruction it did the same and again and again….

When the broadcaster released an hourly update, “Play my news” worked.

Hi All

I have a Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen.

I have a routine that includes playing the news. I have configured the news services I wish to listen to in the home App, and this has been working for about a year new. Now all of a sudden when I play the routine on the Nest Hub, it includes a whole bunch of news services that I do not want to listen to, and did not select. When I check the Google Home app, the news selection is as I originally had it. If I run the routine off my phone, then the correct news services are played.

I have disconnected the Nest Hub from the power, and turned it back on again, but this hasn't seemed to fix the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on, or how I can get the correct news playing on the Nest Hub again?

Many Thanks

This is EXACTLY what I'm experiencing! I also tried to reset the device and even checked my firmware versions. Nothing. The routine works as intended with the correct news outlets on my phone (Pixel 6), but not on any of my nest devices.

Same here! Probably, and hopefully, a Google problem that will be fixed shortly.

I'm having the same problem. Hopefully someone posts a solution soon

Boo1

I’m having a similar problem; wrong news service is playing, except mine is not a routine, it happens after I request “play the news”

just started a couple of days ago. Tried all the things. Hopefully someone has an answer soon

same here.  Happened first  on july 15th and always since then

Exactly the same issues for me as well. Additionally, an update a while back made the Google assistant lists (e.g., shopping list) unable to be rearranged. Still hasn't been fixed. Google, stop messing up your services!

Ad me to the list.   Love my google home products, but hate their updates that break thing way too often

Looks like I’m not alone. I thought it was something funky going on because I got a new phone around the same time. It’s reassuring to find out it’s not just me

Mine is working as expected again since this morning. 19 july.

Try to disconnect all other accounts that you have connected to ur google hub!! It worked for us 🙂
