Remove categories in Google home screen

Kaajee
Community Member

Does anybody if and how i can remove or change the (in my case) 2 category "widgets" in my Google Home screen? Google self added the two items at the home screen, but i don't want or need them there.

(Mines are in Dutch, lights & Climatecontrol, but English probably the same)

Hey! To remove or change those widgets like "Lights" and "Climate Control" on your Google Home screen, you can try this:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. On the main screen, find the widget you want to remove.
  3. Tap and hold on the widget, and you should see an option to remove it (it might say "Remove" or "Delete").

If that doesn’t work, these widgets might be linked to devices or rooms you've set up, so you may need to adjust those settings in the app to change or remove them. Hope that helps!

No that does not work for these "widgets".

Google self "decided" that these items/widgets should appear (i don't know why?) and one can not seem to edit them. At least i can not find how.

Hi Kaajee,

Thank you for reaching out to our community.

I’m sorry to hear that you can’t remove or change the category for two widgets (lights and climate control) that were added automatically to the Google Home app. No worries; here is the help for you.

Thank you, chriswilson for your contribution to this community; we appreciate your kind help.

Before I start further troubleshooting, let me ask you a few questions:

  • Are you using an iPhone or an Android device with the Google Home app?
  • Is the Google Home app up to date?
  • Can you tell me, please, if the status of your widgets in the Google Home app appears turned on or off?
  • Are you using another app to control your widgets?

In the meantime, I recommend you try with the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Remove the Google Home app from your mobile device.
  • Reboot your mobile device.
  • Install the Google Home app again on your mobile device.
  • Check if the two widgets that you need to remove still appear in the Google Home app.

If the widgets still appear in your Google Home app, follow these instructions to remove them:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Tap on the option “favorites” (the heart icon) or devices (the square icon with bars).
  • Tal on Settings (the gear icon), then select the option “remove device.”
  • Select the option "remove.”
  • It will display a list of devices; choose the widgets you want to remove.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Virna

Are you using an iPhone or an Android device with the Google Home app?

I use both, on both platforms it is the same issue

Is the Google Home app up to date?

yes everything is up to date

Can you tell me, please, if the status of your widgets in the Google Home app appears turned on or off?

There is no “status”, they are just there (Google self has put them there)

Are you using another app to control your widgets?

no, i dont use other apps

In the meantime, I recommend you try with the following troubleshooting steps:   Remove the Google Home app from your mobile device. Reboot your mobile device. Install the Google Home app again on your mobile device. Check if the two widgets that you need to remove still appear in the Google Home app.

tried that, no change. The two items are still there (on every device with google home app installed)

If the widgets still appear in your Google Home app, follow these instructions to remove them:   Open the Google Home app. Tap on the option “favorites” (the heart icon) or devices (the square icon with bars). Tal on Settings (the gear icon), then select the option “remove device.” Select the option "remove.” It will display a list of devices; choose the widgets you want to remove.

This does not work either, besides that, i do not want to remove devices, i need and want to keep all devices. I just want to get rid of these unwanted groups/categories that google self decide to put there. For example the category “klimaatbeheersing “ (climate control) consists actually out of 2 devices; a Tado thermostate and 2 (same) electric smart heaters.

off course i want to keep these devices and do not want to delete them, because i want to use them.

Hi Kaajee,

Thanks for your kind response. I really appreciate this information you’ve shared with us to provide you with better assistance. I’m sorry to know the troubleshooting steps provided didn’t help to remove the widgets or categorization that appear automatically on the main screen of the Google Home app.

Now that I have a better understanding of the way you want to customize your widgets on the main screen of the Google Home app, please follow the next steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap on the edit icon. (In the middle of the screen you will see a pencil icon.)
  3. It will display a list of devices that are selected or marked with a check mark.
  4. Tap on the check marks next to the categorizations that you want to remove from the main screen of the Google Home app so they stay without the check mark.

Now your devices will appear only in the “devices tab” and will disappear from your main screen.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Virna

No that does not work either.

There one can only edit ones favorites and there is no check box for the (automatically made?) categories.

One can also add or remove "actions", "automations" or "devices". But the categories self are not there.

For example , i do not have any devices checked, only automations and actions.

So i can not unmark any devices.

Hi Kaajee,

I’m sorry to hear that the provided instructions didn’t work either. I would appreciate it if you could send me a picture or screenshot of the following screens:

  1. What do you see when you open the Google Home app?
  2. What do you see when you go to your devices tab?
  3. What do you see when you go to your automations tab?

Please make sure to erase your profile from the pictures.

Thanks for your attention; I will be looking forward to your response.

Best regards,

Virna

No doesn't work.

Those two items do not appear when i click edit/bewerken.

Only "actions", "automations" and all the devices appear in the "favourites" to check of uncheck. But the items "verlichting " & "klimaatbeheersing " are not there. I have no idea where Google home got them from , but they are not anywhere in a list.

Hi Kaajee,

Thank you for your kind response. I appreciate the effort you invested in sharing with me the requested pictures. Those pictures help me to better assist you.

Please follow the next steps:

  1. Tap on the pencil icon that I rounded with a red circle, the one that says “Bewerken.”.
  2. When you tap on the pencil icon, it will display the names of the unwanted 2 items.
  3. Next to the unwanted items there is a square (next to each one of the items) with the check mark.
  4. Tap on each one of the squares to clear the check marks.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Virna

No, as i said already, these two items to not appear when i want to edit the home screen. They are not in the list of all the other items that are there.

The whole "categorie" section is no where to see.

I have the same problem! I can't get rid of the Climate box/widget that is at the top of my Google Home screen. See screenshot that I have attached.

Did you ever figure this out?

Kaajee

No not yet unfortunately.

I/they escalated it, but since then, nothing.......

This bothers me as well! I have a box named Climate that sits above my favorites. I have tried everything, including all the options listed under your support and I can't get rid of that darn box.

This is also annoying me, at least let me move categories below my favourite devices.

Jacco

yah, If I could move it it wouldn't be an issue. But like the other poster I have a category called "climate" now. Which I'm guessing most people have just 1 thing in there, the thermostat. I only have 2 Google home Items total.

Mogzol

Yeah, I also would like to hide the categories section, really annoying that you can't. The "Lighting" category is there for me, but it's pointles because I only have a single light, and it's already in my favourites. The category just takes up space.
