Hi all,

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Nest family. We appreciate the opportunity you've given us to help keep your home safe and secure.

Today we have a few important updates to share about Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works with Nest. These are all longtime Nest products that many of you have depended on to take care of what's most important, and we take your trust in them—and in us—seriously.

Over the years, we've launched new, updated products and features that deliver even more help and security for you. As we look at what it takes to support your needs going forward, it is increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware and newer, better options available.

As members of our community, we wanted to let you know about the changes that are happening:

Nest Secure
In 2020, we announced a long-term strategic partnership between Google and ADT, a leading US security and home automation provider. With this partnership, our goal was to develop even better solutions for greater customer peace of mind and choice, including giving users the option to add new types of sensors and professional monitoring.

We believe that our partnership with ADT creates a more helpful smart home security experience to help people connect and protect what matters most - both today and in the future. So starting April 8, 2024 support will stop for Nest Secure. Until that date, all current features will remain available and you can continue using your Nest Secure as you do now. After that date, your Nest Secure will no longer be accessible in the Nest app.

We understand that changing the technology in your home is hard. To show our appreciation and help provide a smooth transition, we will give users an exclusive offer for a Self Setup System from ADT on us (up to $485 value) or $200 to use on the Google Store.

Eligible Nest Secure users have been emailed with instructions on how to redeem this offer with a unique coupon code.

Dropcam
We are proud to have launched Dropcam over 10 years ago, and it was one of the first smart cameras on the market. As we look at what it takes to support your home security needs going forward, it has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware. So we made the difficult decision to stop support for Dropcam starting April 8, 2024.

All features will remain available until April 8, 2024. Dropcam will no longer work after that date, and you will no longer be able to use your Nest app to check status. If you wish to keep your video history, please download and save before this date.

If you are a current Nest Aware subscriber, we will be offering you a Nest Cam (indoor, wired) on us to help you keep your home secure. If you are not a Nest Aware subscriber, we're offering a 50% discount toward a new Nest Cam (indoor, wired). Nest Cam is part of our next generation of cameras with more helpful features like HDR and built-in intelligence. We hope you will continue to trust us to help you at home. Please note, your Nest Aware subscription will not be automatically canceled. It will continue to work with any other Nest Cameras in your home. We will contact eligible Nest Dropcam users with instructions on how to redeem this offer.

If you're in the US, we can help you recycle your Nest Secure and Dropcam. Our third-party recycling partner will send a postage-paid shipping label to your inbox.

Works with Nest
We created Works with Nest in 2014 as a way for smart home devices from other manufacturers to take what Nest knows and help personalize your experience, such as turning off lights when you're away. The connected home has evolved significantly in the past 10 years. In 2019 we made the decision to eventually retire Works with Nest to unify our efforts around third-party connected home devices under a single platform for developers with a focus on compatibility, security, and privacy. We extended the support for Works with Nest for the last few years, and we will officially end Works with Nest as of September 29, 2023. Until that date, all current Works with Nest connections will remain active. Starting Sept. 29, those connections will no longer work and you will lose access to them. In the coming months, for those interested, we'll make available a script editor for you to create advanced home automations that will offer new features and capabilities. We're also working closely with our partners to provide replacement integrations where possible. Learn about the changes and options available to you.

Thank you for your support
We know you might have questions about these transitions and the change they bring; please rest assured that at Google, we are building and supporting devices and services that work well together and are there for you when you need them. We hope these upgrades will help ease the transition and offer new, helpful experiences for your home.

We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause you, but we're committed to helping you and minimizing disruptions. For questions regarding how to redeem your offers, please contact our offer redemption team. If you need help with anything else, our support agents are standing by.

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Nest family.

This announcement only affects Dropcam, Dropcam Pro, Nest Secure, and Works with Nest. This announcement does not affect other Nest Cam models. If you need help determining if the camera you own is a Dropcam or Dropcam Pro, please refer to this support article.

Will this announcement impact my Nest x Yale Lock? Will I still be able to use my lock after support ends for Nest Secure?
This announcement only impacts your Nest x Yale Lock if you use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi. Once support stops for Nest Secure on April 8, 2024 you will no longer be able to use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi. As a result, you will no longer be able to lock or unlock your door using the Nest app. You will still be able to lock and unlock the door using the keypad on your Nest x Yale Lock. Until then, there is no impact.

Only a Nest Connect device will be able to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi after support for Nest Secure ends. If you currently own a Nest Connect, you may need to move it closer to your Nest x Yale Lock to connect it to WiFi.

For users that do not currently own a Nest Connect, we will provide one at no charge. We will send eligible users an email in January 2024 with instructions on how to receive a Nest Connect.

Will I need to buy a Nest Connect if I want to keep my Nest x Yale Lock connected to WiFi after support for Nest Secure ends?
If you currently use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi and do not own a Nest Connect, we will provide one at no charge . We will send eligible users an email in January 2024 with instructions on how to receive a Nest Connect at no cost.

I can’t (or don’t want to) install a Nest Connect in my home. What will happen to my Nest x Yale Lock if I don’t install a Nest Connect by April 7, 2024?
Starting April 8, 2024, only Nest Connect will be able to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi. Without a Nest Connect, you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door using the Nest app. You will still be able to lock and unlock the door using the keypad on your Nest x Yale Lock.

Can I install a Nest Connect to use with my Nest x Yale Lock after April 7, 2024?
Yes, however you will need to factory reset your lock to use a Nest Connect as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi . We strongly recommend installing a Nest Connect before April 7, 2024. This will ensure that you can continue to use your Nest x Yale Lock with the Nest App after April 7, 2024.

First of all, this is pretty lame. I will never buy another google hardware product ever again.

Secondly, will Nest Secure continue to work locally?

thanks.

Will Nest X Yale Smart locks continue to work after april 2024?

I've got Nest Secure and sensors all over my house.  So you're going to make the products I have stop working that I've invested in?  How is that possible?  Or even allowed?

tonytrucco

So, Nest Secure will no longer appear in the app, but will it still function as an alarm system? Will I still be able to set it to Away, or Home and Guarding from the device itself? Will the tags that I can use to unlock it with a tap still work? Will the window and door sensors still function and signal an alarm if something happens?

dmurphynj

@WeeTü - support ends April 2024 - that’s an entire year from now.

Frankly, this is quite generous I think.  Replacing my 10 year old camera at no cost with a modern model is beyond what I would have expected.  Nice job, Google!

edit: I don’t have a Nest alarm system so I can see how frustrating that would be.  Just talking about the Dropcam piece of things.

I've spent over $1000 purchasing sensors for each window, and nearly $500 for the initial system. In return for Google cancelling sorry for their service, I lose trust in the Google brand, get $200 to buy crap from Google which won't be supported in a 5 years, or go to a security service, where I get to pay a fee for them to monitor my house in a way I was already doing myself.

Thanks Google!

Some partnership. How about allowing adt to be able to continue to be able to use all the existing secure products in use. Glad I waisted thousands on Nest only for google to destroy it. At least I have a year to switch and buy all new products from another company. I will never buy another google product again.

I dont know why Google did what it did just now and with a one day notice! I spent good amount for door & window sensor and it was one of the good DIY solution. Why pushing and offering something which does not make sense. Does this mean I can continue to believe in google and it's product? I will now think twice!! This just shows lack of respect for customer!

Stupid, shame, ridiculous, if Google don't have good products enough to make people keeping buy don't put the oldest one on trash just to make us buy the newest one! ABUSIVE!

Like many of us, I’ve spent thousands on sensors and integrating with the Google ecosystem. The system and hardware works just fine today — please open source the nest secure system and enable third party integration.

I invested in the Nest Secure system and only have 5-6 years of use.  Couldn't the support/contract be sold to somebody else?

RT2MDO

This is horrible. Will it still work locally? I can’t believe you are going to just disable a perfectly working alarm system.

Who only uses 2 door/window sensors? I need at least 10!

How is it even legal to strong arm your customers into a newer product? You state your motives (of forcing us into a newer product) without even hiding it!

I see some people have 10 year old cameras, and the change isn’t that bad.  Well, I have 10 cameras, and some are only a couple of years old, but it’s all going to be discontinued. One of my cameras is still unopened in the box. I guess it will never be connected. And the outdoor cameras I paid even more for will be useless too. I agree with those that say they will never buy google products again. This is completely unethical. I could understand dropping support for any repairs that might come up, but I’ve spent a lot of money on cameras that will be useless. And most of mine don’t go back 10 years. Disgusting!

Will the door and alarm sensors continue to work and be visible in the app?

I'm in the UK using Nest Secure, so I guess I get nothing? What a waste of time and money! The system was ideal for my needs.

I have 18 Nest Detect sensors installed across my house. Will these continue to work with the ADT Smart Home Hub that you are offering as a replacement? If not, then the replacement offer with only 2 compatible sensors will mean that I have to come out of pocket for 16 more sensors??

Update: I confirmed with ADT that the Nest Detect Sensors will not work with the new ADT hub so yes we will have to pay for any additional sensors beyond the two free (they cost $15 a piece). I did confirm that Nest cameras and Doorbell will work with ADT systems but they charge an extra $6 a month for monitoring video which is equivalent of the Nest Aware service. I asked the ADT rep to cover the cost of the extra sensors and I'd sign up but they wouldn't do it. So I'm gonna sit tight for a year until support is discontinued and then make the switch assuming the offer is still available. Unless Simplisafe or some other competitor is smart enough to make us a better offer before then

dmurphynj

@Georgiaboy  The Dropcam line was discontinued early 2015.  So the newest camera being dropped is 8 years old - it’ll be 9 years old when it finally stops working.

If yours say Nest on them, they’re fine.  It’s just the original Dropcams that go end of support here.

I built a complete system costing thousands. There’s not a thing wrong with the sensors. Just replace the hub but maintain compatibility with the rest of the system and let’s move on.

dont be evil.

dont be greedy.

I sincerely hope that all of my sensors, smoke detectors, and Nest doorbell cam will work with the ADT system. It is hard to imagine that I would have the throw all that stuff away. Can you let us know that hardware will work with the ADT system that replaces Nest?

Nick18

What happens to the Nest thermostat, door locks, doorbell cameras? Will they all work with the ADT hub? I appreciate the offer to update to an ADT hub, but only 2 sensors? I have 12. It should be a  1 for 1 transition to make my system whole post transition if you have any sense of decency. To do anything less makes my $1000 investment 4 years ago a huge ripoff compared to just getting a cookie cutter ADT or Brinks system. Absolutely poor form.

Leeds

What will happen with the door locks and smoke detectors?  Why can’t the door sensors be transferred to ADT?

Good thing I went all in on Google Nest for home security.

We need information on locks and smoke detector support.  I assume they will be supported since they are not included in the announcement.

Really, google? You don't have enough money, you have to force us all to upgrade our entire systems? Many don't have the money to do that. You can't just leave the old app alone for all of us? This is gross ethics.

Wlangley7

This is the worst news I have ever received from Google. If Google is going to retire the Nest Secure, they should offer existing/loyal customers who purchased the Nest Secure a one for one swap out for another system. Retiring something that is working just to add more profit to ADT is ridiculous.

gorgonzola

I've spent thousands on Nest Protects, Nest Cams, Nest Secure, Nest Thermostats, Nest Detects, Next x Yale door locks, and Nest Hubs. Nest Secure is the centerpiece of my home security system, and if it stops working, all of the investments I made into Nest hardware become completely worthless.

I will never buy another piece of Google hardware if Nest Secure stops working. I just bought it in 2020, and you're now telling me it will be made useless less than 5 years after it was purchased. This is incredibly disrespectful to your customers.

This sours me on the entire Google ecosystem, and I'll be exploring moving to a different smart home platform as a result.

The whole point of having a smart home is control, why can’t we maintain a local security system?  Google is not only forcing us to dump all existing equipment of which many of us have invested more than what the adt kit offers.  Why not allow migration of sensors?  If no migration is allowed a good will 1 for 1 swap should be offered.

paristhedog

I am in Canada so I get nothing? You are just going to disable my security system I spent money on?! I can't even use it locally and you want me to recycle it?!!? I will switch everything away from Google and cancel anything I have with you if this is how you treat customers. I was always all in with Google.... that is going to change!

Heiner98

I call for a class action lawsuit. Bought a Nest Secure just to find out that it will be discontinued few month later.

What a bunch of baloney and now they offer you 200 $ for the Google Store? WTF, do they really think I will buy another google product? Goto hell google.

Here is what they offer:

We know this is inconvenient, and we understand that changing the technology in your home is hard and that you rely on our products. To help you transition, we’re offering you a Self Setup System from ADT on us (up to $485 value),1 or if you prefer, $200 to use on the Google Store.2

I agree a class action lawsuit is needed.

I’m filing a complaint with my states AG office and recommend ya’ll do the same. It’s one thing to end support for a product, but Google is intentionally bricking the device and making it unusable. The free ADT security system is pointless when the reason I purchased a Nest Secure was for the tight integration with my Nest Cams, Nest Detect, Yale lock, as well as 3rd-party integrations with other smart devices. $500 out the window because Google decided to kill yet another product.

I’m shocked!! Baffled…

Thought it couldn’t be true at first. This is ridiculous and I’m really wondering if it is even legal.
I’m an EU resident and we have laws that say consumer products have an expected lifespan. Google is cutting this in halve or at least scraping years off of it. And making it worse, they don’t compensate EU customers.

I expect major lawsuits. Which would be nothing more than righteous.

Nope!! nothing will work- article says Wi-Fi will stop working 🤯. They are telling us to throw all away & giving us $200. I invested COUNTLESS hours getting all working in 2 homes over years so I’m just supposed to throw away $5k & start over. Google - go to hell in a hand basket 😡- almost seems illegal. I hope lawyers get involved. At least let us keep our local units via Wi-Fi !

I still use my Nest app. I never migrated to Google home. Will my app still function to monitor my thermostat when away, make thermostat changes, and to check my smoke alarms?

I certainly hope Google will release  more detail on this. What all devices will work with ADT? Two sensors and a hub is far from the set up we currently have and honestly a joke. If a full re-invest effort is needed then there is no way we stick with Google. I would have no faith they wouldn't just do this again in 5 years!

I have over 20 sensors

2 nest guards

2 doorbells

8 outdoor cameras

3 thermostats

1 smoke detector

1 Yale lock

most of it was purchased a couple of months before google purchased Nest.

every component currently functions as designed and intended.

please reach out and tell me what functions if any will work beyond 4/8/24.
Also, a $200 credit in the google store in exchange for more google products is a slap in the face.

I need to know if these will continue working locally.

With regard to ADT: I previously subscribed to ADT/Nest Secure monitoring. At one point my Nest Secure was completely disconnected from the internet for three days, and I never received a call from ADT asking what was going on. It was almost as if they weren't monitoring the system at all. Some peace of mind! After I canceled, they refused to give me a refund for the last month's fee. I charged back the fee with my credit card because they were clearly not providing the monitoring services, so they sent my account to collections! It was a nightmare to get it resolved. I will never be an ADT customer again.

I was stupid for investing in a google service - they have a long history of canceling products, without regard to their customers (https://killedbygoogle.com/). Go to a competitor - Ring or SimpliSafe. I stupidly standardized on Nest with secure, Yale lock, smoke detectors and thermostats. An expensive error - learn from me and don't make the same mistake. Leave Google, they don't care about this business - and just don't trust them again.

Google is (and probably has been) light years away from "Don't be evil." The best we can do is not fall for it again. Go elsewhere, even if it costs more now.

Outrageous that Google has decided to discontinue support for Nest Secure.  Google has in one fell swoop told a vetted customer base willing to spend thousands of dollars on one of their products that they are not reliable.  I will NEVER buy another piece of google hardware again.  The ADT upgrade package is disgustingly tone deaf to existing Nest Secure customers.  The Nest founders should never have sold their interest to Google as they have shown themselves time and time again to be poor stewards of great tech.  A warning to future tech founders and customers alike.

So... after having invested heavily in Nest and literally purchasing every single Nest product in effort to have a complete holistic home automation solution, Google is fully dropping support for one of if not the most important central piece? When Google originally announced sunsetting Nest Secure in 2020 it was communicated that the solution would remain fully supported into the future. Many retailers were still selling the Nest Secure starter kit just last year (2022). I know this because I bought one to get extra Nest Detect sensors. Now, if I understand this announcement correctly, effective April 8th, 2024 my security system not only won't work with ADT but also won't work as an autonomous stand alone system? This might be excusable if Google was offering an updated alternative. But no. Explain, what's the benefit or value in keeping any of the other remaining Nest products? Nest is most useful as a complete solution whereby I set my home to "Away" and my alarm is set, my thermostat goes into eco mode, and my cameras turn on; when I come home I need only unlock my Yale Nest X deadbolt and everything goes back to "Home". Without this central piece I see no need to keep or upgrade any Nest product moving forward or maintain my Nest Aware subscription given the very clear hard position Google is taking in truly maintaining long term support or lack thereof for what most would consider permanent fixtures in their home.

I have invested in numerous Nest Detect motion sensors, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, cameras, thermostats, etc. installed across my house.  We rely on these tools every day to protect our family.  Will these devices continue to work with the ADT Smart Home Hub that you are offering as a replacement?

It appears that this is a complete rip off that renders an entire ecosystem of technology useless in thousands of homes.  What a waste of money and resources.  I would also like to call out that:

1.  Google sent this message on the Friday of a holiday weekend clearly in an attempt to minimize attention to their disgusting greed, and

2. The message was intentionally written to be unclear and evasive.

At a minimum, you have an obligation to clearly communicate/respond to your customers that have posted questions here.  These questions directly impact the safety and security of each customer and their families.

I have over $2000 in Nest products.  Cameras, hubs, thermostats, sensors, CO2/smoke detectors.  Now they are all going to be junk?  At least keep the system alive.  I guess a multibillion dollar corporation run by people making millions can't be bothered by us minions.  Just spend another $2000 and $20 a month for support?  No way.  Heading to a company where security is their primary focus and not a sideline.

We purchased the whole house security system in 2020 without knowing they were to be discontinued. We have multiple cameras and doorbells. When we switch to adt, we will no longer use the google home hub - instead we will use adt flatscreen hub BUT all of our cameras and door bells will still work and connect to ADTs hub. Correct?

So Google, will the nest become opensource or will it just end and become another e-waste that will sit in a landfill for thousands of years? I mean congrats on working with adt but you were supposed to be an alternative to national security systems. This was supposed to be a do-it-yourself system. So why take that away. You dont want to handle the system anymore then opensource the code and give us the ability to use it still. Give us the ability to integrate it into other systems we already have. The cost and time to change our systems is absolutely outrageous with what you have decided to do. People conscious company my foot. GOOGLE, you have become the thing you hate, complicated. You are more work than you are worth now. Instead of being easy you have become harder than the most complicated search engine out there.
