Hey everyone,

We're designing the Google Home app for the future of the smart home — a single place to set up, manage, automate, and control thousands of compatible devices in your home. The latest update builds on experiences from Android home controls and Google Nest smart displays to deliver seamless interactions across your home.

image_enUS_P6P_2021Q2_F_StormyBlack_21_0502_0499_01_1762s_R05QC_NestMoments_MNM4_DeviceTiles_HomeViewGHA_RGB_SIMP_02_14_22.jpg

Simpler, more helpful controls

The way you control and interact with your devices is getting better. Over the next few weeks, we are rolling out some new controls on the home view that make it easier to control your connected devices with fewer taps. Android users will notice a familiar experience to the smart home controls that launched with Android 11.

On both Android and iOS, the new controls help you quickly find and understand the status of the devices in your home so you can dim your compatible lights or change the music volume in a snap. You can also tap to turn a device on or off, slide left or right to make adjustments, and long press for more controls.

Privacy settings

This week, check out Google Home app Settings to see new privacy settings. In this centralized entry point to managing your privacy, you can review and adjust your privacy controls, home activity and Assistant data settings right in the app.

Manage your household’s settings, including presence sensing to control which devices can help detect if someone’s home in order to start Home & Away routines. Browse your data, including your home activity and your data in the Assistant. Learn about privacy on your shared devices, Google Privacy & Security Principles, and Nest Privacy & Security commitments in the home.

Coming soon

Later this month, we will make improvements to the home feed to help you better understand what’s happening in and around your home. The update automatically sorts your home’s recent and most important events in an updated clutter free layout. Grouped events will help you understand what happened around the same time instead of scrolling through a list of repetitive events.

We hope you enjoy these new updates! Let us know what you think of the new home view in the comments section.

The blog clearly states later this month and it was written March 2022.  Now here it is March 31 which according to the blog was later this month when it was written and here we are with nothing as usual but we do get birthday wishes from Google Home which is so important…not

@S3bryan it has rolled out 🙂

Neil. Thank you, but your comment was far too generalized. There are no app updates and there have been no changes to the app which means this is a phased rollout. A Phased rollout will take months to deploy.  Please clarify if I am incorrect as of this moment there are no changes in the home app

neil_rahmouni

@S3bryan the feature with the sliders for instance is already inside the latest app version (and can be enabled if you edit the app)

So it's going to be released as a server side update. Although it could be a slow rollout, it could also very much be a fast one.

Also I believe it's already rolling out, since there are many screenshots of it everywhere, but I'm not too sure, it may only be ppl tweaking the app

I have looked around the app but do not see the settings that you speak of meaning to enable it. Would you mind to elaborate a bit more aware those settings might be for those that one to try it

As the first person to comment on this thread I’ve been watching all the comments, issues, frustrations and complaints build, comment after comment and not a single response from anyone a Google. I think that tells you everything you need to know about Google and their marketing focus. Company that doesn’t put their customer’s and their concerns anywhere other than their review mirror. Bit of a disgrace really.

This was interesting: Amazon only seems to carry the older model of the outdoor camera.

I don't care about the reputed updates to come. I just want my old functionality back and I suspect that enough people feel the same that they don't want the new camera. It is also interesting that Amazon sells the old camera for more money than I paid for the new camera at Home Depot.

I'm going to try to take back the new camera I just bought. Then I need to figure out whether to stay with Google or not. If I am going to stay I'll buy the old camera for $200 and get the more expensive monthly subscription which offers what I used to have for half the price.

I've looked and looked, verified I have version 2.49.1.8, forced stop multiple times, restarted my phone and forced stop multiple times, but still, I have the old UI.

What do I need to do to make sure I have the up-to-date version?

It's nice, but the platform needs some real improvements instead of visual touches.

I use Google Home for few years, and I can't say I'm satisfied. Five years passed and I can't even get full data from my Netatmo sensors. Expected much more from a big company like Google.

Currently, giving a chance to Amazon Echo and Alexa - the features there are amazing - on a device made in 2020!

Like above. I have lost faith in Google. I spent £600 on a new Eero Pro 6 mesh Wi-Fi system to replace my Google wifi and all I can say is wow. Set it and forget it. I was having continual dropouts with GWifi random items dropping out while others remained connected, glitchy connectivity especially on Web Meetings etc. The network at home is now rock solid. Can’t get it right Google customers talk with their feet.

So... Big News.... Today I finally got the new UI "improved" Google Home app update... Bravo Google Developers, Bravo. It takes a certain kind of idiot that can take a product that already has a lots of terrible user experience issues and make it even worse.

So I have a Lightwave 3 gang light switch to control 3 sets of lights in a garden building gym, office & porch. Now in the app to switch on the gym lights I can't do it from the main interface I can only turn all on and off. To switch an individual set of lights I have to select on the Lights icon drill down into the Garden building then into the 3 lights link. Wow just wow.

It's bad enough that everyone has detailed all the issues they are having with the camera's, I have read dozens of threads on the Wifi issues (Already packed those in a box and replaced with Eero Pro 6 which has been faultless so far). In addition you are also selling Smoke and Heat detectors that do not meet local and legal building code in the US and parts of the UK. By law in Scotland in the home, and in the US (I believe where you have an integrated garage) it is a requirement to have installed a linked smoke alarm system. In Scotland and in the garage as mentioned above the linked sensor cannot have any smoke detection only heat. The Google Nest Protect system doesn't allow the Smoke detector element to be disabled or Google do not sell heat only detectors to meet this law. It will soon be law in the other parts of the UK as well i'm sure, and yet Goole are still able to sell their products in these countries where they do not meet legal requirements.

I can't wait for the wait for the Google teddy bears with the eyes that can be pulled off and swallowed.

I think I will move everything over to Amazon or Apple Home they seem to have their sh*t together.

@Redpedr0 wow. Yes and yes. Also yes. Also are you Portuguese??

i feel like we’re in similar, albeit distinct boats. But I’m practically about to give up on even trying to get google to listen. They don’t care. I fully believe that whatever products they release are basically training models for AI and they are using us to teach the models.
“We could use an AI to do x and y.”

”let’s create a smart home app with an assistant so that users can train the ai for us!”

millions of users talking with the assistant, teaching it queries, recognizing accents and so on. And we are dumb enough to even pay to be able to do that.

anyway… right now my google speakers are basically voice controlled switches for different stuff at home. And a Spotify sink as well.
i swear to god, I would love for google to set up a sort of “expert circle”. You know, get a bunch of users to complain directly at the devs.
And live stream it. I’d take a day off work for this.

i don't know who came up with idea to replace nice intuitive icons with bricks, is this a material design. it doesn't fit screen anymore, text is broken for long names. no wornder Google products are so bad, it starts with visual and this is really a major step back. at least give us an option to switch back to old theme huh?

I was going to buy the Google Nest Cam with floodlight to replace my old security floodlights.

Now, after reading all the comments here, as well as in other forums, about how truly bad the Google Home app is as compared to the Nest app, I think it is prudent to stay away from buying any more Google Nest products, until Google actually listens to its customers and upgrades the app.

I have other Nest products, that I use with the Nest app. I don't want to use two apps to control separate devices. From what I have read, the Google Home app is a nightmare.

Thanks but No Thanks Google.

Zews, one shouldn't trust anecdotes. If you compare the rating of the Home app to the Nest app, the Home app rates higher than Nest, 4.3 versus 4.2.

the nest app rates higher at 4.7 to the 4.5. And if you read the messages on here the complaints are how poorly designed the google home app is.

@jamesjand @S3bryan

What is the source of the "ratings" you reference of the Google Nest app vs. the Google Home app?

Unlike the Google Nest app, the Google Home app does NOT provide these camera features:

* manual selection and editing of clips
* the Enhance feature to set zoom when recording history
* a scheduling feature
* the ability to flag sound events
* email notifications
* adequate timeline capabilities, including the ability to select a date
* browser access to cameras

I think you need to get some experienced programmers working on the google home app. Basic functionality, that should have been in the first version, is missing. You can add a third party account to the app, and it brings in all the devices supported so that you can control them through the assistant. That's great.  But when you no longer use that account/devices the app breaks. Unlink the no longer used account and now you still have all the devices "offline". Really? You can add devices when you link an account but don't get rid of them when you unlink?

If I had released software like this I would have been fired.

I bought an old style Google exterior security camera for $200 from Amazon. I paid more for the old style. Apparently when people don't buy the new one the price for the old one goes up.

What a pleasure. I had it working in about five minutes, the browser interface worked, the old Nest app worked. Yay,

And then I noticed that throughout the night at random times the infrared lights shut off and comes back on in a second or.  I really wasn't looking for a science project. My original cameras have worked very well and would probably still be working if I hadn't dropped one of them.

Now I've gone through the annoyance of finding that Google requires the use of new software with reduced features for the new cameras which took me quite awhile to figure out because it just seemed so unlikely that Google would do something like that. And now it seems like I've bought a defective old style camera. Nuts.

One thing that annoyed me about the new camera software was that it would only trigger if it detected a person. It was amazingly good at that. If it even got part of a human in front of the camera, it would trigger. Still I wanted it to trigger on more events. It turns out that there is a setting for what events the camera will trigger on and it worked pretty well.

A couple of things that are so lame that I just didn't think Google would do them.

If you buy the upgraded Home Aware service it will record 24/7 and store it for awhile. Cool, except you can't download anything that isn't in the triggered area with the new camera. Of course, the old camera and old software works fine with regard to this.

The triggered time span with the new camera working with the new software is very small and doesn't include any video that led up to the trigger event even if you pay for the upgraded service.

@Leticia Do you guys actually read the comments on these blogs?
Person after person is asking for you to bring back functionality that you removed when you botched your transition to Google Home from the Nest application.

Will you ever fix these issues, or is it time we all throw your kit in the bin and start over with another company.

I find these changes more difficult to use, poorly documented changes, and unneeded changes.   Making functional changes to how some basic functions work requires an examination requiring more than some intellectual perception of elegance.

Are you going to give us a way to delete unused devices from the Google Home network? I've noticed its a fairly big topic on here.

PedroLiberal
Community Member

@Swede0311 that is user error.

devices that come from integrations (say, SmartThings, xiaomi etc) and other vendors must be removed there first. Then you ask google “sync my devices” and they are removed.

you can alternatively delete the integration all together, that also cleans the devices off google home.

e.g.: I have a Samsung tv on SmartThings . I added SmartThings to google home and the TV is now on google home as well. I resetted the TV, and now google home sees it “offline”. I deleted the SmartThings integration and the TV disappeared.

added SmartThings again, and the TV is back again, still offline. After setting the TV again on SmartThings, and syncing the devices once again, google home sees the TV too.

it’s really obvious, you simply cannot manage devices outside of google home, from google home.

TimberM3

  • @PedroLiberal No, it's not user error, it's poor design and even worse documentation.

@Swede0311 I found a solution. If you have invited anyone else to your home, you must also unlink the third party apps from their app on their account. It seems that if you unlink an integration from your account ownership moves to anyone else in your home. It then needs to be unlinked again.

Is the Google Home App going to be updated to make it more like the NEST App??? I love the NEST App. I do not like the Google Home App at all. Just bring back the NEST App.

To @MplsCustomer: If you are looking for reviews, one only needs to go to Google Play to compare Nest vs Home, or over to the Apple store for a Nest vs Home comparison.

Either way, the rants about features miss the point, that product decisions are not the domain of programmers - someone wrote that Google should get better programmers - and that those decisions are informed by studies and researchers, and even then, sometimes by security concerns.

MplsCustomer

@jamesj

Comparing App Store ratings for the Google Home app and the Google Nest app is like comparing apples and oranges. The Google Home app covers a different range of functionality than the Google Nest app. Even so, the App Store shows 4.7 for Nest and 4.5 for Home.

I don't think I'm "ranting" to point out that, unlike the Google Nest app, the Google Home app does NOT provide these previously existing Nest camera features for its new cameras:

* manual selection and editing of clips
* the Enhance feature to set zoom when recording history
* a scheduling feature
* the ability to flag sound events
* email notifications
* browser access on a computer via the home.nest.com website

The fact remains that our one new Google Nest Camera (Battery) lacks features present in our older Google Nest cameras. For 8 months, we have also been stuck with having to use two apps for our Google Nest cameras. And the new camera would also lack 24/7 video history if we hadn't paid extra for the optional power cable.

You are right to say that product decisions are not the domain of programmers. They are management decisions. Google Nest management chose to provide less functionality in its new cameras. Google Nest management chose to require existing Google Nest customers to use two apps instead of one to manage our cameras and receive notifications. Google Nest management chose to release a Google Nest Camera (Battery) and a Google Nest Doorbell (Battery) without disclosing until months later--and only after numerous complaints--that the cameras' batteries cannot charge at temperatures below freezing. Google Nest management chose to release battery cameras that, when operating in battery mode, are in an "Idle" state and therefore cannot record the beginning of an event. And Google Nest management chose to release a battery doorbell that--even when connected to power--cannot record 24/7 and cannot operate at temperatures below freezing. These are not rants; they are observations about management decisions.

its great that you are making updates... hopefully theyre things people actually WANT, for a change, but im not holding my breath.

more importantly, PLEASE, for the love of god, DO SOME QA/UAT before rolling these changes out. ANY quality control would be better than the evidently NONE that is usually done... i can live with it when all the other mostly-useless google apps or services arbitrarily break because clearly QA is asleep at the wheel, but when youre heavily invested in the google ecosystem for home automation (and man, if i had that decision to do over again, you can bet i would) it is a HUGE problem when things break. like, say, yesterday when we all lost the ability to manage devices in routines. but no biggie, why bother to test one of the MOST CRITICAL CENTRAL FEATURES of a home automation system, right?

way to be on the ball, google.

How about fixing the balkanization between the Nest App and the Home App.

I have a mix of devices, all labeled and sold by Google as 'Nest' devices.

However, some of them only work in Home App ( New Battery Camera ) and and all of the other cameras and devices I have only show video history in the Nest App ( Nest Hello, Nest Indoor Cam ) with my paid-for Nest Aware subscription ( that apparently *doesn't* cover all of the Nest devices in my home.... )

If you're going to deprecate the Nest App, then the Home App needs to have the same features added, before you start doing all this other useless stuff.

This level of jankiness is what drives your users insane, and makes us hate Google devices, because you all have ADD and keep leaving project at a half baked level before jumping to the next one.

Commit to continuity for your customers, who have paid you money for integrated devices and apps, instead of constantly breaking compatibility!!!!!!

@Leticia  I would like to see a dashboard of some sort for google home. Preferably accessible via a web browser instead of just within the app. It would show details such as

  • google wifi setup
  • speed statistics
  • bandwidth usage across the day. This would help understand bandwidth requirements for home use when comparing service providers to move service to.
  • outages from the service provider to the internet connection (when it was dropped and resumed). This would help in discussions with service provider on quality of service and compensation discussions for service drops.

This would also be the dashboard to see

  • nest energy consumption
  • smoke alarm statistics
  • etc

  Can this be considered for a future release please?
