2021 Battery Nest cam clips not recording

Hi - I have one of the 2021 new Nest cams (outdoor battery) and I cannot for the life of me find a way to save a recording clip which was NOT triggered by an event. I have my Nest cam wired up all the time and I have the Nest Aware 24/7 recording subscription.  What I am trying to do (which I can do on my older Nest cams) is go to a spot in my recorded video history and save a clip. Note: I want to save a clip that is recorded in my footage, however I’m not finding an option to save the clip. I fear this is because even though everything is saved in the cloud only video which triggered an “event” are clips able to be saved.

Can someone verify and please tell me that’s not so?

The reason I am asking is because I had something knock my camera down off the magnetic base and I can’t save the clip to replay it on my local phone/computer. I’d really like to save the clip but it wasn’t triggered by an “event”

Thanks!

Hi Stevesturn,  unfortunately there is not.  It is because of that crappy Google Home app lacking MANY features that are in the Nest app.    I ran into so many limitations that I returned the new cameras and purchased used previous gen cameras from Ebay so that I could use the far preferable NEST app.

Thanks @EmptyNester!  Yeah, this is more bad news, in fact isn’t this a safety/security issue generally?  As in, if something happens to a family member or something on my property which is caught on camera (but not caught as an event) and I need to save a recording in which I PAY FOR!  How can I NOT do that?  So dumb, google.

I bought the cam and found out the hard way no Nest app support, then I found out I needed a power cable (sold separately) to keep it recording 24/7, now I’m finding I can’t save a clip on a recording video in which I pay a service to do so. I’m fine with google attempting to integrate everything into the google home app, but keep the Nest products separate until the google home app is usable, instead of cheaping out on the new cams with a gross lack of software support.

I’m not sure why google doesn’t (or didn’t) instead invest its money into making the IQ cameras better and more affordable. The IQ cameras are (or were) amazing and my ONLY complaint with those was the price. The outdoor IQ camera was probably the best in class camera on the market and it’s gone. Instead of continuing to invest in those cameras, google is going backwards with these Nest battery cameras. Great concept, poor execution. I’m just hopeful this stuff improves because all of my issues thus far seems like software issues.

Just allow the new cameras in the old Nest app until google home is ready. I’m sure there’s a compatibility issue there, so frustrating.  The nest app solves like 99% of the current problems or at least the functions within the nest app solve those problems.

Hi again, you are singing to the choir here.  I have posted that to them many times starting a few months ago.   As have MANY people if you read thru the endless threads on this forum all complaining about this very misguided product release.

Having worked in development this feels to me like something has gone very wrong and that there actually is no one working on the Google Home app.  It has been months since this product release and we have had virtually no updates with even the smallest of new features or enhancements released.    Just my 2-cents.

Thanks again @EmptyNester - oh yeah, I know I’ve seen other posts about these major issues. I started with the threads from @MplsCustomer on the lack of Nest App support and I saw a few related issues to the issue I mentioned in this thread (not being able to save non-event related      video clips), but didn’t see any specific post to that issue. Also happy to add my two cents as well.

Also, I can relate to working in App Dev - it would have been nice to ask current customers opinions on the path forward for Nest Cams. I seem to recall a customer survey at one point a year or two ago, however I’m pretty sure ANY customer that tested or provided input into these new cameras would have raised the red flag with the missing Nest app support alone, until all of the functions are in the google home. The other thing that would be nice is if google provided a list of planned enhancements (or rather previously supported functions within the Nest app excluded from google home) with target dates in google home.  You raised the same point I did on another thread as well, and that’s “what has been done since the Fall when these released to make progress in google home?”, sounds like minimal, if anything. I’m even late to the party and still angry by the lack of support.

Let’s hope it gets better, because I’ve been invested/investing in google/nest products for years, as are many people here, so it’s pretty clear why we’re unhappy!

I noticed the same behavior with my new Nest Indoor. In order to download a clip, it has to be considered as event. I’m personally very disappointed with Google’s decision to remove a basic functionality. I’m also extremely frustrated that I cannot use the old app with the new camera.

we had a meteor captured by our camera but it did not trigger an alert so we could not find a way to save the clip. I came on here to see if I had missed something.

I wish I had not got hooked into the whole Nest thing. The Nest app is brilliant. Google Home is a huge step backwards. Gutted.
