Am I misunderstanding something about activity zones?

JacobR

I installed a Nest cam with floodlight last weekend, and, for the most part, I 've been pleased. I am, however, scratching my head with one issue:

My camera picks up activity from the street in front of my house. It's not a huge zone, but it's enough to pick up moving vehicles and people walking. I don't want notifications from that area. I like to see them in my history, I just don't need to be pinged about every single one.

I've tried to solve this in two ways:

1) Create one giant zone that excludes the area generating the undesired activity, turn on all the notifications and history for that zone, turn off notifications and leave on history for everything outside of a zone.

2) Create a zone that is just the area that I don't want notifications from, turn off all notifications but leave on history for that zone, turn on all notifications and history for everything outside of a zone.

In both of these scenarios, I'm still getting notifications about cars and people from the area that I don't want. Am I missing something?

Go into settings and turn off ALL notifications

I don't think that would accomplish my goal. I still want some notifications. I just only want them from a certain zone.

Hey JacobR,

Appreciate the help, twittel. Try recreating your Activity Zone and make sure that there is no overlapping. Also, check out this link for additional help. Keep us posted.

Thanks,

Thanks, Aatienza. That article seems to be more about when notifications aren’t coming through.

I only have one zone, so I don’t think overlapping could be the issue. In my original message, am I misunderstanding how zones should work? Is there something wrong with the approach  I described?

Activity zones continue to appear to be completely broken for me. I have one zone that has notifications turned ON, and I have notifications turned OFF for OUTSIDE of zones. I'm still getting notifications from OUTSIDE of zones. The notifications are reported to be inside my one zone even though they are nowhere near it. Am I the only one?

@JacobR

What troubleshooting steps are you taking when trying to set up the Activity Zones?

Hi, Brad. Thanks for your time.

All of the actions I’ve taken so far and the scenarios I’ve set up are listed in this topic. Do you have any specific questions? Are there any further steps you recommend?

Nothing further to say when it comes to troubleshooting because the alert system can be turned on or off. If you turn it off, it is off for everything, not specific settings. These cams are made to alert you, so if you do not wish to get alerts and have set up Activity Zones and everything then I would suggest you reach out to Support for further assistance.

Thanks for checking in, Archie.

There's been no change in functionality for me. My activity zone notification rules continue to be ignored. I've disabled vehicle notifications altogether to cut down on noise from the street. This is acceptable for now. My next step was going to be to reach out to support as Brad suggested.

I'm not sure what more information I can provide here. If I can clarify any details that I've already presented, I'll be happy to do so.

I will clarify one thing, since after re-reading Brad's message, it's not clear to me that I've managed to communicate it clearly enough.  My issue is not about preventing or allowing all notifications for the entire frame. There are portions of the frame (the street area) that I don't want notifications from. The activity zones seem to indicate in the settings I've seen that they should be able to facilitate this functionality. It doesn't work as I would expect it to, though. It seems like the notification rules per activity zone are completely ignored, and that the only set of rules that really works is the "Outside of Zones" set. Or that every event is detected to be outside of a zone, even though it isn't. I'm not sure which it is, but the outcome is the same. Does that make sense?

Thanks!

I think I see what you mean now. If your settings are being ignored even though they are set correctly, that seems to be a bug or issue that is probably not specific to your device. However, I would suggest that you still reach out to Support because if the resolution is a replacement of a malfunctioning device, I cannot assist you with a replacement here. That is why I suggest you reach out and work with support on this one.
