Camera is not seeing events

Boy1
Community Member

Hello,

My Nest Door bell is not notifying me when people are walking up to the door. It is not seeing me when I walk up and wave at it. I have all notifications on. It only alerts me when the doorbell is rung. I have restarted it. Turned it off and on. Disconnected and reconnected. Checked battery and wifi connection/strength. I can open the app and see live video.

Hi There,

Thanks for posting here in the community!

@Boy1, I'm sorry to hear that your Nest doorbell isn't providing notifications for events. I'd be happy to help! I also appreciate all the efforts made. To better assist you, I'd like to ask a few questions:

  • What is the model of your Nest Doorbell?
  • Are you using the Nest app or the Google Home app?
  • Are you using an Android or iOS device?
  • Are there other family members who can access the camera? Do they receive any notifications?
  • Has the camera been moved recently?
  • Are there any Activity zones set up for the camera?

For now, I'd suggest the following:

  • Ensure your phone's software and either the Google Home app or Nest app are up-to-date.
  • Check the Event history through the app. You can refer to the specific article depending on the app you use: Video history in the Nest app or Video history in the Google Home app.
  • If you have Activity zones, make sure the area isn't too bright or dark, and also verify that these Activity zones don't overlap. If the Activity zones overlap, delete them and recreate them with no overlap.

I also appreciate you letting me know about your experience with your Nest doorbell, @canusend3474. I understand how inconvenient it is when you're not able to get the video recording. To better understand the situation, I'd like to know what type of Nest Aware subscription you have and if you want to see events or 24/7 video history.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hi @Boy1,

Thanks for following up and the information you've provided.

If you can share with me the model of your Pixel phone, that would be very helpful. I'd also appreciate knowing the phone model of your other family member who isn't getting notifications.

Here are some additional steps you can try:

  • Restarting the mobile device.
  • Try turning off 'Events notifications' for five minutes and then turning them back on through the Google Home app. You can refer to the next article: Camera and doorbell alerts.
  • Turn off and on all permissions for the Google Home app. Here's how:
    • On your Android phone, go to Settings.
    • Select apps and notifications.
    • Select all apps.
    • Locate the Home app.
    • Select Notifications.
  • If possible, you can also try testing notifications on another mobile device to see if the inconvenience persists.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hi @Boy1,

Thanks for the information about the phone models.

Just to confirm, could you let me know if you see any difference compared to the last steps? If so, please let me know how it goes.

I also appreciate it if you can check the 'Events' history to confirm if the Nest doorbell is able to record the motions but not send the notifications. You can refer to the following article: Camera and doorbell alerts.

Keep me updated.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hi Jennifer,

all our apps are up to date, we turned off notifications and turned them back on. No events are be recorded. The only time an even is recognized is when either the doorbell is pressed or when I have the app open watching the camera and I walk in frame.

Hi @Boy1,

Thanks for following up! I understand how inconvenient it is when your Nest doorbell is not recording events. I'd be happy to help!

To gather some more information, I'd like to ask the following:

  • Did your Nest doorbell ever record events in the past? If so, when did it stop working?
  • Did anything change in your home or with the doorbell around that time?
  • Since you have a Nest Aware subscription, is all your event history missing, or only certain parts?
  • Do you have a schedule set up for your camera? Did the schedule say the camera should have been on at the time of the missing history?

Here are a few things to try:

  • Let's check if this issue happens only on the Google Home app or even the web app. You can find more information here: Google Home for web and Nest web apps.
  • If you can, try adding a family member with a different phone (Android or iPhone) to see if the problem is specific to Pixel phones. To add family members, you can check out this article: Share a home & devices in the Google Home app.
  • In the Home app, turn the doorbell off, wait about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

I have the same problem. I DO get notifications when someone are pressing the doorbell, but not when someone just walk up to the door.

Hi @klp100,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! Sorry to hear your Nest doorbell (battery) isn't sensing people approaching. I'd be happy to help!

Before proceeding, could you confirm if you've already tried the troubleshooting steps suggested previously? If you have, could you also provide the information requested previously?

In addition, to better assist you, I'd like to ask the following:

  • Does this happen during the day or at night?
  • Do you have an active Nest Aware subscription (Nest Aware can affect motion detection)?

In the meantime, you can check if Events are activated through the Google Home app (this can affect alerts). You can find instructions in the following article: Camera and doorbell alerts.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
