Camera not recording

Why didn’t my doorbell camera record for hours

@apadame

I don't know whether this addresses your question or not, but the new Google Nest Doorbell (Battery) only records EVENTS (even if it is wired); it does NOT record continuously. In addition, unless you have a Nest Aware subscription, you only have access to events that occurred within the most recent three hours.

One further thing. I suspect that--if you do NOT have a Nest Aware subscription--the battery doorbell only records events that you have selected under either "Seen events" or "Notifications". I'm not entirely sure about this, though. We have one Google Nest Camera (Battery) with a Nest Aware Plus subscription, and under "Full history", we only see events that we've configured under either "Seen events" or "Notifications".

If you search this forum, you'll see lots of concerns about the battery camera. Besides concerns about battery life, these include concerns that, because the camera in the battery doorbell is usually "Idle" to save on the battery, it doesn't wake up in time for some events. That's why, when we decided to add a doorbell last month for our third entrance, which was never wired for a doorbell, we opted for the older Google Nest Hello Doorbell and connected it with an OhmKat Power Adapter for the Nest Hello.

Thanks for the info. My Nest doorbell is wired. I get notifications when the camera notices a person so I see my son leave for school everyday. When I went back to check the history I noticed the 3 hour gap. I have also had the camera lag more often now and then I miss things. Like when packages are dropped off. Could it be my wifi?

@apadame

It could be the doorbell rather than your WiFi. Some customers in this forum report that the doorbell camera sometimes or often misses events because the camera is in an "Idle" mode rather than recording all of the time. And since the battery doorbell only records events, if it doesn't detect an event, it won't record it. And if there are no events for a 3-hour period, the camera also will not record anything.

Our older Nest cameras also miss events sometimes. But they record 24/7 with our Nest Aware Plus subscription.

With our Google Nest Camera (Battery), we can go 6-8 hours at night with no events, because we have the street in a zone where we don't flag any events. But since we have 24/7 recording, we can scroll through the night on the timeline. (Scrolling is terrible in the Google Home app compared to the Google Nest app.)

I’ll keep monitoring it. Thank you.

Hey apadame,

Sorry for the delay here. Let's dig deeper into your concerns one at a time.

A few questions — when did this start? Is this the Nest Hello or the Nest Hello doorbell (battery) but is on a wired setup? Also, could you provide a rundown of the steps that you've already tried so we can pick up from where you've left off. Let's start with the lagging and the gaps on your video/event history.

Best,

Melba

I have a wired  Nest doorbell. I have tried restarting the app and it is updated. When I get a notification of a person at my door, I click on it and I see a black screen and the blue circle just goes round and round.
i tested the doorbell and it rang in my house but didn’t register on my phone. Sometimes I get the doorbell notification.  A man came to my door the other day and I clicked on the notification and it lagged and lagged. When I went back to the app he was gone.
Also the recording is very short.

Hey there,

Appreciate this added detail. Does this happen only on your phone or across all devices where you have the Nest or Google Home app? Is the phone connected to a network with good Wi-Fi strength? Also, does it persists on another network like mobile data?

I only have the app on my phone. It happens anywhere I view it (home, work..)

Hey there,

I understand. Have you tried checking your Nest camera feeds using a computer by logging into https://bit.ly/3gW4i8w if the lagging and delayed notification still persist? This is for us to fully isolate if the delay or lag is happening only on your phone.

I don’t have a computer. I tried it on my iPad and the same thing happens. I clicked on the video from this morning and it freezes.

Hi Apadame,

Appreciate the help @MelbaDT. Let's check on this further.

A few questions — How far is the Nest Doorbell (wired) from your router? Have you have added any devices that might interfere with your Wi-Fi connection? Do you have a Nest Aware subscription?

Keep us posted.

Regards,

Steve
