Cameras Offline (But only some) - cant figure out why!

Hi Folks,

In the last week or so I have noticed that all of my outdoor cameras (2x nest cams & 1 Nest doorbell, wired) seem to go offline during the night - early morning around 2-3am. My indoor cam, which is the only one piggybacking a range extender (TP Link) stays live. The outdoor cameras are all on the main router.

When we are asleep is the WORST time for the cameras to cut out as we don't realize until we wake up.

Router restart seems to resolve the issue every time, but the query is:

  1. Why do the outdoor cams go down, but the indoor one on the extender stays live?
  2. Why do all other devices (2x nest hubs, 2x nest speakers) all reconnect okay? (these are split between main router and range extender).
  3. If, for example, the router went down at the timeslot mentioned, and comes back online - why dont the outdoor cameras reconnect automatically - is this a functionality issue from either a firmware or software perspective?

I cannot figure this out at all and it's extremely infuriating!

@Gazdev

One possible cause is something with your Wi-Fi network.  Does your router go down or restart every night?

As far as reconnecting, your cameras should all reconnect automatically. Our ISP provider has had several outages for maintenance purposes at night, and all of our 1st gen and 2nd gen cameras and doorbells have all come back online automatically in each case.

Hello everyone,

@Gazdev, thanks for reaching out here in the Community. To know more about this issue, I’d like to confirm, how far are your Nest Outdoor Cameras from your main router? Are there any appliances in between your Nest Cameras and router that can interfere with the wireless signal? For troubleshooting, you may try restarting your Nest Cameras and Wi-Fi router and monitor its behaviour.

Let us know how it goes.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,

Emerson

Hi Emerson. The nest doorbell is approximately 10ft from the router. The others are quite a bit further away, something like 25feet, but they historically have been working absolutely fine. For reference, the indoor camera is currently on the same network now as the doorbell (for testing purposes: it was previously on the extender). The doorbell went down last night at 3am but the indoor camera didn't. It's very confusing!

Yes you are absolutely right they should reconnect. I am only seeing the indoor cam reconnect successfully (even though it's further away from the router) but the nest doorbell and other outdoor cams don't rejoin unless I restart my router.

Hi Gazdev,

I appreciate your update. You may remove them from your app, reset them to the factory default and re-add it. Monitor its behaviour and let us know your update here.

To know more about reset, here's our webpage about "Restart or factory reset Nest camera or doorbell".

Best,

Emerson
