Can a nest doorbell work with wifi service that is cellular (T-Mobile 5G Home Internet)?

Hi all,

I had an electrician over to install my new Nest Doorbell. When it got to the step to register it in the Home app, it said it couldn't find it. I verified my phone is on the correct wifi SSID, and we reset the doorbell and the router.

One of the troubleshooting steps on https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9276282?sjid=13011885202171428803-NA said to go into airplace mode on my phone to ensure it is using wifi rather thean cellular to connect. This makes me think the Nest Doorbell won't work with wifi using a cellular network.

Could anyone please confirm that, or advise other steps to make it work?

Thank you!

Hi walkb,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community. I’d be happy to help you with your questions. Let’s check them out.

The way T-Mobile 5G Home Internet works is by using a wireless 5G Gateway to deliver 5G Home Internet to your home. Then T-Mobile's 5G Gateway Device connects to your devices via Wi-Fi 6. You can think of it much like how a phone’s mobile hotspot works.

We generally recommend turning off cellular data on your phone only during the setup steps for your Nest devices so that the mobile device will stay connected to WiFi only and prevent any errors. Once the setup is done, you can turn on both WiFi and cellular data on your mobile device.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Lance
