Cannot create a video clip with Google Nest (Battery)

mikediana

I am very disappointed with the Google Nest Cam (Battery).  I have been a Nestcam user from the very beginning. (Had a Drop-Cam first!)  I live in an area with abundant wildlife and I like to capture the video clips on my Nestcams.  The new Nest Cam (Battery) 1.) doesn't work with the Nest App, only the Google Home App, and 2) I cannot create clips.  This really needs to change or I will have to find a different camera system.  I hate to do it because I have loved my Nestcams!  Google!... please address and fix this issue or you will be losing valuable customers.

@mikediana

Some customers in this forum report they have resorted to using their phone's video capture tool to capture and save video from their newer Google Nest cameras.

So are you saying they take a video of the video. Not sure I understand. If that is how they are doing it - the quality would certainly become degraded.  It was (is, with my still working original Nestcams)  so easy with the Nest app / computer. You can (could) start and stop at the exact second that you wanted.  I hope Google fixes this. If not, I will be shopping for a different system soon.

The iPhone has a built-in utility that allows you to capture the video played in the Google Home app. I haven't used it, and I'm sure the quality isn't as good.  I don't know about Android phones. I too miss the capabilities of the Google Nest app and the home.nest.com website.

Hi folks,

I’m sorry to hear about your experience. For 2nd gen Nest cameras and doorbells you can create a video clip out of the events.

Here’s how:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Select your camera.
  3. Tap History near the bottom of the screen.
  4. Scroll to an event in your camera's video history timeline. You can also tap Full history for a list of events.
  5. Choose the event you want, then tap Event details.

Note: You can only download video clips from detected events in the video history. You can't download video clips from footage with no activity. The maximum clip length setting for your camera or doorbell will affect how long video clips can be.

I appreciate your help, MplsCustomer.

Thanks,

JT

I’m sorry bit that is not good enough. With the nest app you can make a clip anywhere in the recording events. Make a time-lapse video and start and stop the video when YOU want, not just the “event” which may not start and stop in time or it will go too short or too long. This is a major problem that if not fixed - Google Nest will lose one of their longest customers. (And many more as I will no longer recommend Nest)

Thank you for looking into this. I would be happy to participate in a market research/ product improvement discussion, as there are A LOT more that needs to be addressed to bring the Google Nest cameras back to the great product it used to be when it was just Nest Cam. 1. Ability to scroll through the footage now is not as good. 2. Ability to see all the camera at once is not on the app 3. The history is terrible now. It takes way too long to load, and more.  I have lost two of my older Nest cams because the controller part quit working. I’d like to replace them but will not get another Google Nest cam until I feel they have made the necessary improvements. Is there a way I can purchase a couple of controllers (internet part, not sure what it’s called) for my older cameras?)

Hello everybody,

@mikediana, we appreciate you getting back to us. However, we don't have any news to share about applying these features to the Nest app or Google Home app. We're always looking for ways to improve and we'll take it as feedback. I'd suggest you send feedback about your concern using this link to let the Google Engineering team know about your concern. While they won't respond directly back to you, this is the best way to let them know about this. Please let me know if you have other questions or concerns as I will be locking this after 24 hours. Feel free to start a new thread and we'll be happy to help.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer and JT.

Best,
