Change Nest Wifi Network

Md123
Community Member

I set my Nest Indoor 2nd Gen camera up using the Google Home App.

I’ve now moved to another state and cannot add the camera to a new Wifi Network without resetting it on the old network, which is thousands of miles away.

I’ve tried to add it with both the Home and Nest Apps but neither seem to work. Is my device essentially bricked, or is there a way out of this? It seems insane that all your devices would get bricked if your router broke.

@Md123

Have you tried performing a factory reset (see link below) to clear all settings (including Wi-Fi) and then reinstalling it in the Google Home app?  (Use the factory reset instructions, not the restart instructions.)

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9252162

The instructions you linked clearly state: “Note: Your camera needs to be connected to Wi-Fi for it to be removed from the app and factory reset.”

I’ve moved to another state and don’t have the original router. This is the problem: it needs to be on WiFi to factory reset, but you need to factory reset to get it on wifi

@Md123

Yes, your camera needs to be connected to Wi-Fi in order to perform a factory reset by means of removing it from the Google Home app.

However, as the instructions also state, you can also "Use the reset button" to perform a manual reset, following the directions there.

Judging from other posts in this forum, that SHOULD allow you to reinstall the camera, and hopefully Google Nest does not leave behind a ghost image of the previous iteration of the camera.

Ah I did not see those instructions, I’ll give that a try. Hopefully it also works in a Wired Nest Camera 2nd Gen. Thank you!

Hi Md123,

Thanks for reaching out to our community.

I’m sorry to hear that you can’t add your Google Nest Cam Indoor using the Google Home App to a new WiFi Network. Thank you for providing us with important details, such as that you have tried to set it up with the Google Home app and with the Nest app without resetting the old network. No worries, help is here.

Thanks MplsCustomer for your contribution to this post.

Before I start further troubleshooting, let me ask you a few questions:

  • Are you getting any error messages?
  • How far is your Google Nest Cam Indoor from the router?
  • Do you have other Nest devices in the house?
  • Are there other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi where the camera is connected?
  • Are there devices or appliances (such as baby monitors, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) near the Google Nest Cam Indoor?
  • Do other devices experience slow internet speeds?
  • What color is the LED light on your Google Nest Cam Indoor?
  • What WiFi frequency band do you try to connect to (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)?
  • What is the make and model of your router?
  • • Does the camera have a subscription?

Thanks for your kind attention; I will be looking forward to your response.

Best regards,

Virna

Please read my original post: I’m a thousand miles from the router, in another state. This is the issue, you need to be on the original network to factory reset. As far as I can tell if you lose your original network your devices are bricked.

Hi Md123,

Thanks for your prompt response. I understand your concern; however, I have confirmed that you can still factory reset your camera using the reset button, even though your camera is not connected to your previous WiFi.

Thank you MplsCustomer for your help.

Please note that your camera’s entire video history and snapshots will be deleted. Once your video history and snapshots are deleted, they’re gone forever. They cannot be recovered. We do not keep backups.

If you want to save any video footage before you perform the factory reset, create video clips or timelapses and download the files to your phone or computer.

To proceed, follow the steps below:

  1. Locate the reset hole on the bottom of the camera head. It’s between the power cord and the camera neck.
  2. Insert a paperclip, thumbtack or similar into the hole. Press and hold down.
    • At 10 seconds, the status light will blink yellow four times, and you’ll hear a countdown tone.
    • In 12 seconds, the status light will be solid yellow. When the camera begins resetting, you’ll hear a confirmation tone.
  3. Release the button. Your camera will restore to its factory settings.
  4. After the factory reset, your camera will appear as “Offline” in the app until you remove it.

Once your camera is removed from the Google Home app, and the light of your camera is pulsing blue, you can set up your camera, following the steps provided in this article: Set up and connect Nest camera.

Please let me know how it goes,

Best regards,

Virna
