Familiar Face Detection

Cap82

I have had the Nest Doorbell, Nest Floodlight Cam, and 2 wired Outdoor Nest Cams for almost two years with the Nest Aware subscription. It still boggles my mind on how poor the accuracy of the Familiar Face Detection is. I am constantly going in and editing saved faces to other names. There is no reason a 7-year boy should be confused as a 68 year old woman, but these are the mistakes that are constantly happening. Especially when Google Photos facial recognition software is so accurate. Please fix!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for posting, I’m sorry for the inconvenience — let's get this sorted out.

Do you have an iOS or Android device? Does the issue occur on multiple mobile devices or cameras? Also, are you using the Google Home or the Nest app?

Let us know and we'll be happy to help.

Best,

Lance

I'm using an Android device (Pixel 6 Pro).

Using the Google Home App...issues with the old version and the new updated version.

I have the Nest Doorbell battery, Nest Floodlight Camera, Nest Indoor Wired Camera, and 2 Nest battery/wired cameras.

I have the Nest Aware subscription. Issue occurs on multiple phones (me and my wife's but we're on the same home/family group). I am constantly going in to correct faces/names. It's pretty embarrassing when a known person will come to the doorbell and it will announce a completely different person is at the front door. The Google Photos facial recognition software is insanely good. I would think it would be pretty easy to use the same software on a different product, especially since I pay for the annual subscription.

Hello Cap82,

Thanks for getting back to us and for sharing what you’ve done to have your concern resolved. I apologize that the feature isn’t working correctly.

While the Nest cameras are designed to be as accurate as possible, they may still misidentify certain things, like distinguishing between close relatives.

Here are some tips to help your camera detect faces better:

  • Position your camera so it can see faces easily. Familiar face detection works best when the subject is directly approaching the camera.
    • Place your camera roughly 6–8 ft (18–244 cm) above ground, and place your doorbell about 4ft (122cm) above ground.
    • Place the camera where people would naturally walk towards it, such as facing a path or down a driveway.
    • For best results, the camera should be placed within 10 feet of where people will walk towards it.
  • Check the lighting around your camera. Check your camera’s view at different times during the day to make sure that there’s no glare from the sun or other light sources.
  • Review your familiar faces library on a regular basis during the first few weeks, especially after you add a new person.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Lance

Good afternoon. All of the suggestions you made previously have already been done. I am attaching a screenshot of an example I found today while going thru the faces and correcting them, which is several times a week.

Again, I'm not sure why Google Photos can pick out faces from a group of 50 people in a crowd and correctly identify them when a paid subscription service from the same company and I'm assuming access to the same software, constantly incorrectly identified very obvious faces.

The attached is of my 11-year old daughter. My face, a 41-year old bald man is slipped onto her faces page. This is 1 of many that I corrected earlier today.

Thank you.

Update... Looks like I'm not able to add a screenshot or image, but can send separately if needed.

I appreciate the inquiry and offer, but I find it ridiculous that I have to go thru the Saved Faces several times a week and spend 5-10 minutes re-organizing faces and names.
