First Gen Nest Doorbell Mechanical Chime does not work

slandeira

The chime and announcements for my Nest Hello (1st Generation Nest Doorbell) stopped working about a month ago. I did everything that has been recommended on you tube and the google community forum. I readjust the cables, changed the transformer, reset the doorbell, checked and rechecked the settings and still, I have great camera images but when someone pushes the button, the chime works one out of 10 times and the "someone is at the door" announcement does not come along either. I am lost at what to do and honestly, I do not want to buy another nest doorbell if this is going to be a pattern in quality every couple of years.

Perhaps the internal battery (yes, it has one) in your Google Nest Hello Doorbell is failing. When it fails, the doorbell goes offline for a minute whenever the doorbell button is pressed, the indoor chime does not ring, and visitor announcements and notifications don't occur.

Since the internal battery is supposed to provide power to the doorbell's camera in the instant when the doorbell's button is pressed and power is diverted to your indoor doorbell chime, the workaround is to turn off the "Indoor chime" option for your doorbell and rely instead on "Visitor announcements".  In that case, the doorbell works fine except for ringing the indoor chime. That's what we've done now in succession on all 3 of our Google Nest Hello Doorbells.

This has happened to MANY other customers. Google Nest says they "cannot" replace such doorbells if they are past the 1-year warranty. See this very long thread with over 1,000 replies:

Some customers have tried prying open their doorbells and replaced the battery with a 3rd-party battery:

Hi everyone,

@slandeira, thanks for reaching out here in the Community. To know more about this issue, I’d like to confirm, what is the light status of your Nest Doorbell when the issue is happening? How did you perform the factory reset? Also, were you able to read the information that MplsCustomer has shared?

Looking forward to your response.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,
Emerson
