Google nest cam is CRAP

Nathan622

Just installed this camera and of COURSE it doesn’t catch somebody doing damage to my property but it catches me walking in 5 minutes before. I am so frustrated by this $150 POS. Better off getting an Arlo or something with a wired power connection since they give you a 3 foot cord that has a special connector to it so you can’t buy longer or anything. What a joke. RETURNING ASAP.

@Nathan622

We've had a Google Nest Camera (Battery) for a year, plugged in with the optional power cable. It works fine (except that it works only in the Google Home app and therefore lacks some of the capabilities of our older Google Nest cameras). The cable comes in 5-meter and 10-meter lengths; it's also sold at Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Amazon:

When you mentioned that it captured you 5 mins before someone else damaged your property...

https://www.reddit.com/r/Nest/comments/szjkql/nest_doorbells_default_cooldown_period_causes/

Experienced that same cooldown period which isn't adjustable. This applies to my nest cam 2nd gen too.

Basically FYI to burglars out there, if you see a property with nest cameras, bring a cat and let it lead first to buy you a 5 min window of non detection.

Hi folks,

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer and qapnguyen.

Thanks for visiting the Community. We’re sorry to hear that. Let’s sort this out. When did the issue start? What type of Nest camera do you have? How far is the camera from the router? Have you checked notification settings in the Nest app or Google Home app to ensure the expectations are correct? Do you have an Android or iPhone? Are there other devices connected to the same WiFi where the camera is connected to? Also, are there devices or appliances (such as baby monitors, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) near the camera?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

JT

Unfortunately this is by design and not adjustable. Cannot alter cooldown times.

The flaw is armed with this information and knowing the distinct look of Google cams this opens up a window of opportunity of property entry.

i.e. Wait until someone walks past external google cam, then you got 8-10 mins to break in unless there is internal detection detection like another google cam or separate PIR product.

@qapnguyen

Where did you get this cooldown chart?  Is it something Google Nest posts somewhere?

Yeesss she constantly replies with “I don’t know but here’s some results from search” not for everything but way to much to not be annoyed by. Also when I speak to my nest hub my nest mini upstairs gets quiet even if it didn’t hear the “okay google” command.
