How To Resolve Black Live Feed On Google Nest Cam (Battery)

DragonXD

Hi, when I set up Google Nest Battery cameras in Google Home app, the last step that shows you a live preview just shows a black screen. When I move forward and complete the setup, I notice status of the camera is “turned off”. When I click “activate”, nothing happens. No green light showing it’s live. Just stays white.

This only became an issue after I installed Nokia Beacon 1 mesh to my router. I ensured to create a network with 2.4 GHz only to connect the cameras to.

What is the cause of this problem and what should I do to get rid of the black screen?

Hi DragonXD,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community. I am sorry that you are experiencing issues with your Nest Cameras live video (feed) feature when using the new router. But no need to worry, help is here.

Before we get started with further troubleshooting, let me ask you some questions:

  1. When did the issue start?
  2. Are you getting any error messages?
  3. How far is the camera from the router?
  4. Are there devices or appliances (such as baby monitors, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) near the camera?

Internet Provider Limitations:

The camera can establish a direct connection with the new router to stream the live feed, however the video stability and the connection may be limited due to the router's settings or distance from the router. Contact your ISP to inquire about any limitations.

Basic Checks:

Here are some basic troubleshooting steps you can try to fix live video issues with your Nest Cameras:

  1. Network Connectivity:
    • Re-add Camera: In the Google Home app, remove and re-add your Nest Cam. This can help re-establish the connection.
    • Wi-Fi Signal Strength: Ensure your camera has a strong Wi-Fi signal. Consider moving it closer to your router or using a Wi-Fi extender.
    • Router Settings: Check if your router's settings have changed after the update. Ensure it's configured correctly for your Nest Cam.
  2. Camera Reset:
    • Factory Reset: As a last resort, try factory resetting your Nest Cam. This will erase all settings, so back up any important data first.
  3. Nest App and Account:
    • Update App: Ensure you're using the latest version of the Google Home app.
    • Check Account Status: Verify your Google account is active and functioning correctly.
  4. Check for Error Messages: Look for any error messages in the Google Home app or on the camera itself.

You can also check the following article if the Video doesn't play, pauses or skips, to Fix Nest camera or doorbell Wi-Fi connection issues or to Troubleshoot delays in streaming video.

Please keep me posted.

Hi.

1. Issue started when adding mesh network.

2. Error is the black screen. No message.

3. Different cameras, different distances. Max 10-15 meters.
4. No

All basic checks are done and still black screen on live feed. Please provide more support.

Hi DragonXD,

Thank you for following up. I understand your frustration with the Live Video feed issues even after troubleshooting. I apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing.

Since you've already tried the basic troubleshooting steps for your Nest Cameras, please make sure to remove the camera, factory reset your Nest camera as instructed and re-add it again:

  1. Remove the camera from the app.
    • To remove it from the app, open the app, tap on the device, then tap the Settings icon > Remove device > Confirm.
  2. Use the reset button
    • Plug the camera into a power source.
    • Locate the reset button on the back of the camera. Tip: The reset button on the Nest Cam (battery) is located on the back of the camera head.
    • Press and hold the button:
      • At 10 seconds, the status light will blink yellow four times, and you'll hear a countdown tone.
      • At 12 seconds, the status light will be steady, solid yellow while the camera starts the factory reset, and you'll hear a confirmation tone. Tip: It could take longer than 12 seconds, so please keep pressing until the long chime stops.
    • Release the button. Your camera will restore to its factory settings.
    • If the reset is not successful (blue light is not on), please try again.

Note: Please take into consideration that the camera has to be fully mounted to its magnetic mount before the live video starts streaming.

Please check the following guide to Set up and connect Nest camera once the reset is completed.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Mario
