Install a Nest Cam Floodlight (wired) horizontally hanging from a ceiling

I purchased a Nest Cam Floodlight (wired) and wanted to know if I can install it hanging horizontally from a ceiling. I called support and they verified that I can yet Google Support contains the following in their documentation "Nest Cam with Floodlight is designed to be mounted upright on vertical surfaces. Installing it any other way (such as horizontally, sideways, upside down, or at an angle) may reduce the floodlight’s functionality by limiting the motion sensor’s field of view."

Can someone clarify if his type of installation will work?

Hi there, there are a few aftermarket methods of achieving what you want to do - 3 ways that I know of currently. A quick search on this forum, you will be able to figure out quickly. Unfortunately Google current doesn't have any means to support installation on under an Eave or Ceiling.

One of the method uses a bracket that I design and currently produce that's available for purchase on Amazon. If you are set on buying a Nest Floodlight, you can consider buying my bracket.

Thanks for your response. I found the following article which contains photos of the camera installed horizontally. What are your thoughts?

From what I understood, the sensors on the housing body is meant to be orientated parallel to the ground level for its originally designed detection range. When mounted as shown on that Verge article, the detection range is reduced - This being said, I've seen lots of people saying the camera functions as intended for the most part - it just depends on the area you are trying to monitor. For instance, I use the camera to monitor a deep drive way up to my garage, the camera would pick up movements all the way to the sidewalk/road, with reduced detection range the lights might not turn on until after moving object is half way into my drive way. Also if you mounted it that way, the video feed would need to be adjusted (there is a function in the home app to correct this issue).

IMO - the camera mounted vertically looks silly, so I didn't opt to do that or use other "jimmy rig" option to mount it horizontally.

Hi there,

Thanks for bringing up the concern you're having. I'd love to look into this for you. Nest Cam with floodlight is designed to be mounted upright on vertical surfaces. Installing it any other way (such as horizontally, sideways, upside down or at an angle) may reduce the floodlights functionality by limiting the motion sensor field of view.

Best regards,

Thanks for your reply. We had it installed horizontally on Friday and it works fine. The motion detector, lighting capabilities, and video all work as expected. The only adjustment that was necessary was rotating the image 180 degrees.

@mjs560

I'm glad that you were able to install in that way, but please be aware if you run into any concerns, it's installation may be why. Let me know if you need anything else from me.

Best regards,

Brad
