Mechanical chime not working with Nest wired doorbell 2nd gen

Hoping others can help me troubleshoot - I installed the 2nd gen wired camera and the mechanical chime isn’t working. The video works fine and the light is green on the doorbell suggesting everything’s ok. However, when the new dooorbell button is pressed the solenoid on the chime goes down partway a small amount and then back up partway. I found after troubleshooting that the way I checked to prior to installation to confirm the transformer is compatible was not correct. I checked the voltage on the new doorbell and it’s about 14.5 V. Does this suggest the transformer needs to be upgraded?

Yes you should up grade the transformer.  Mine was measuring at 15.7 VAC and the door chime would not work.  I bought a 16 VAC with 30VA and it now works flawlessly.

Hi there,

I can understand how the installation process would be quite frustrating if your Chime Puck isn't working as intended. I would love to look into this further for you. The Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) must be connected to a transformer rated to 16 to 24V AC and at least 10 VA to receive enough power. 30 VA is recommended for homes that have high-impedance doorbell wiring due to long wire runs or thin doorbell wiring.

You may need to upgrade or replace your current transformer. You also need to replace your current Nest chime connector with the new one that comes with the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen). For more information, check this article.

Brad
