Nest Battery Doorbell (wired)

Had a full new ADT system installed on Thursday (three days ago), including Google Hub, ADT alarms and panels, electronic door locks, camera on garage and a Nest Doorbell.   Happy with all but the Nest doorbell.  Battery reduced down to 25% in just 3 days and does not stay charged despite the 2-wire doorbell leads (providing a confirmed 20V AC).   At time of purchase last week, the salesman assured me that I would never have to charge the device so I am really disappointed that it now appears I'll have to do so every few days.   I do face a busy street, but salesperson or installer should have indicated that the doorbell trickle charge would not be able to keep the batteries charged in my situation and recommended another solution.

At the moment, I am recharging it to 100% and reducing all options (minimizing zone, and only tracking people and packages; nothing outside the zone; notifications only packages; wake-up sensitivity to low, max event length to 10 sec; video quality high; night vision and status light at defaults).  Will see if it will hold a reasonable length of charge after those changes.  However, I am going on vacation for 2 weeks starting tomorrow so while I can track if these changes improve battery life, I can't physically doing anything with the doorbell until my return.   If no improvement, I will likely return the device upon my return and replace with something else.  Heck I'm having second thoughts even if things improve, due to the degradations I need to make in the device.

Hi sklynsma,

Thanks for reaching out! I'm sorry for the trouble and for the delayed response. Let's get this sorted — a few questions: is your Nest doorbell (battery) exposed to extreme temperature (sunlight, rain, snow or dust)? How does it feel (warm, hot, cold or normal)? Also, is it fully charged before you first installed it?

Going over the steps here might help:

  • If possible, move your doorbell to a different location where there's a shade for protection or get a protective gear to cover the doorbell.
  • Adjust the angle of your doorbell to a more productive area that catches fewer unimportant activities.
  • Perform a factory reset and try to observe if the battery would still drain quickly.

Please keep me posted.

Thanks,

JT
