Hello community,
i was wondering if someone with my user credentials (hacker) could tamper with the footage of a nest cam (in the cloud) before I saw it or rather is it possible to download footage, edit it and upload it again without me noticing? The answer to these questions will probably affect my decision to get one.

There is nothing at all in the Google Nest app or Google Home app that would let us as customers UPLOAD a video clip up to our video history on Google Nest's servers.

Ok, so externally it cannot be edited and uploaded again, but what about the app itself or a browser? Is it possible that anyone edits the footage in the cloud before I am able to check it? I guess the best would be if users were not allowed to alter the footage at all, only if they downloaded it.

Well, first, you cannot edit clips from the newer cameras that work only in the Google Home app; you can only download them using the Google Home app.
Second, in the Google Nest app or on home.nest.com for older cameras, you can create a custom or manual clip from your video history, and you can then save it or share a link to it (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9207572?hl=en#zippy=%2Ccreate-a-custom-clip). But there's no capability to UPLOAD anything. So even if someone obtained your credentials and logged in as you, all they could do was to create new clips from your video history.

Adding on, all nest camera streams are encrypted when in transport so it can't be hacked on your network or when it is in transport to Google's servers.

First of all I want to thank you for letting me know how the cameras or rather the recording works.
And the custom clips that are created by editing recordings of the older cameras, can they be distinguished from the original clips or are they all the same if you name them accordingly to the original file names (I refer to the section "create a video clip" from the link MplsCustomer mentioned or other ways that might be present to create your own recordings). If you don't know what all the fuss is about I will give you an example: Imagine a sophisticated burglar that does break in, gets into my account and deletes the time when he or she is recorded and connects the recording pieces afterwards as if nothing ever happened. Could anything like this be done?

That is impossible to do. The custom clips are separate from the main timeline.
