Nest Cam Outdoor - causing motion sensors to alarm

Hello there

Hep please! I bought my Dad 3 Nest Outdoor cameras, he already has motion sensors set up after a burglary that really affected him. (Its FM4000E Alarm System by FM Electronics Ltd). We set one camera up to start with and everything was okay for almost a week, but then the motion sensors started alarming. We have now turned off the Nest Outdoor camera and the motion sensors are fine again. I’m at a loss as to why this has happened but assume its the wifi signals? Any ideas how to be able to use both the cameras and the motion sensors at the same time or is it not going to be possible?

If not possible what are my options for other cameras that will work with the motion sensors?

Thank you in advance

Claire

It wouldn't be wifi.  Does this happen only at night?  If so, I would guess it's the Infrard LED's in the camera that turn on.  That's how it sees in the dark.    Some motion sensors are implemented using IR either completely, or in part.  It shouldn't really cause any issues, but depending on where the camera is pointed, and objects in view, I guess it's possible that illumination might change in ways over time (wind, etc) that could trigger motion sensors.  You might see if there are ways to reorient the camera a little to see if changes things.

Thank you so much for replying. Yes it was on a night. So the motion sensors are inside the house pointing inwards (in other rooms) and the Nest Outdoor Camera is on the outside of a window fixed in to the frame (the camera is pointing out to look for people on the outside of the house). If you still think its IR I guess we could move from the window frame and fix in to the outside wall? Do you think thats worth a shot?
thank you

Hmm, that doesn't seem likely then - although I'm at a loss on what else it would be.  Are you sure about the  relationship between turning off the outside camera and the motion alerts?  Is it possible that was just a coincidence? I'd be inclined to turn the camera back on, and see if they return consistently over multiple days.   If they are IR motion sensors, I guess it is possible that there is some IR leaking through the window.  That would likely require open curtains, or otherwise a fair bit of light leakage. IR is just light that you can't see, so if you can see visible light through the window, IR is coming through as well. If there are motion sensors close by that window, it's possible it could set them off.

In terms of the camera position, I was thinking of first just trying to turn the camera a little (but keep in view what you want to see) to see if the IR leakage through the window reduces and maybe avoids the issue.

Fantastic, thank you, let me try your ideas and see what happens…I’ll report back!
