What exactly did you do or try to do?  What exactly happened when you did so?

You can "migrate" a Nest Account to a Google Account, which then provides some access in the Google Home app for 1st gen cameras and for thermostats installed in the Google Nest app, but access remains in the Google Nest app.  After a successful "migration" you log into the Google Nest app with the "Sign in with Google" option using the Google (gmail) account to which you migrated.  (We migrated in 2020.). This is Google Nest's Help topic on migration:

You can also "transfer" 1st gen cameras (but NOT thermostats) from the Google Nest app to the beta "Public Preview" version of the Google Home app.  This is available only if you are using the "Public Preview" version and have already "migrated" or were always logging into the Google Nest app with a Google Account.  (We are not using the "Public Preview" version and have not attempted any "transfers".).
