It's absurd that the Nest Cam doesn't work with the Nest App. This should be clearly stated in the product description. I've returned mine.
Someone should explain to the Product Manager at Google what an awful idea this is.

I thought of returning mine as well, but I went to the trouble of mounting it and getting it all setup before discovering I have to use the Google Home app for this one camera and then the Nest app for all of my other cameras. My old Nest cameras appear in the Google Home app, but there are several limitations in this app (creating custom video clips, easily viewing video history, etc) so I still need the Nest app.
Creating custom clips is IMPORTANT. I caught a package thief a couple of years ago and the police used my Nest doorbell video footage to find the thief and as evidence in the trial against him. These cameras are used for security purposes for many of us so we NEED these new cameras to work in the better Nest app!

Google should call the camera the Google Cam and not brand it with Nest if it doesn't work with the Nest app. This would have certainly caused me to take a second look to ensure that it would work with the Nest App. I'm sure in the software backlog at Google has all the major features of the Nest app slated to be added to the Home app.
This is so typical Google to do something completely tone deaf like this.
