Nest Cam

Hello all got a question.

My outdoor wired Nest cam of several years now just died recently. We decided to just upgrade the unit to a wireless model instead and picked a new one up. I got it home and have it charging but the first thing that crossed my mind was that we were paying for the extra storage, etc (forgive me if I am not wording this correctly) with the old camera. Is there anything to be aware of here when setting it up so it will associate it with the account that we have already paid for? I do not want to have to pay again for the same thing.

Also, I am seeing comments online about wireless cameras not working with the Nest app. Is that correct? I don’t care which app we use to be honest (we have two cameras total - one older Nest that still is in use and now one wireless one). If both are accessible via the Home app I am fine with that as well.

Hi Beck73,  I'm an end user like you.  Yes, sadly the new cameras introduced 1 year ago do work in the NEST APP.   The new cams only work in the Google Home App.  The Google Home App will also see the old nest cameras with a few limitations. You can look and live and recorded clips.  But if you have the Nest Aware Plus (24/7) recording, then you can only look at the 24/7 stuff by going back to the NEST app.

One other big limitation for me is that the new cameras are NOT viewable in anyway from your computer browser.  Hopefully this will change before the end of the year as Goggle has said that enhancements for Google Home are are coming sometime in 2022.

For me I really really like the way the Nest app works so I ended up buying some used gen 1 cams from ebay.   If and when the Google Home app improves I will probably switch the new hardware.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.  I got the camera setup and while it works am extremely disappointed with the Google Home app compared to the old Nest app.
Google Home is a massive downgrade to what I have been using in every way. Here is hoping we see some improvement toward the end of the year otherwise I may end up moving to a different camera/platform.

@Beck73

If you had a previous Nest Aware or Nest Aware Plus subscription, that subscription applies to all cameras and doorbells in the same Google Nest "home", regardless of whether they are supported by the Google Nest app or the Google Home app.

However, if you had the old 1st gen Nest Aware subscription, which applied to just one camera, that will NOT transfer to your new camer.

And yes, Google Nest decided that the new Google Nest cameras and doorbells would work ONLY in the Google Home app and NOT in the Google Nest app or on the home.nest.com website; as a result, they lack some of the functions of the older cameras.
