It seems like this feature removal has come up a few times, but to no avail so throwing my vote in the pot as well. I have a 1st gen Nest camera and then another 2nd gen Google Nest Camera, and unfortunately some really great features were removed when Google acquired Nest. Namely, the alert for a dog bark. I have to rely on outdated and spotty video coverage by my 1st gen camera to notify me if my dog barks, even though I also have Nest Aware on all cameras. It seems like a key feature that was included in the old tech that was removed when moved into Google. I'd really love to see it built into an update for the future.
If anyone has a work around this, please let me know. I guess my work around right now, is the old camera, but I can already tell the video is lagging and updates are not coming for the old cameras, also the app integration to Google Home is terrible! Will be looking into another brand when I get too frustrated with the old camera.

That change has nothing to do with Google's acquisition of Nest; that happened back in 2014.
Rather, it's due to the Google Home app. Google Nest's 2nd gen cameras and doorbells can only detect and report smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
It's one of numerous missing Nest app features:
