Nest Doorbell 2nd Generation - do you need a chime?

We got the nest doorbell 2nd Gen wired but the people who lived in our house before us uninstalled the doorbell chime and dry walled over the wiring. We have the 16volt transformer installed and ready to go but I’ve heard mixed reviews of if you need an actual chime or not. We have a google home and our phones that we were planning to use for notifications so we don’t really feel the need to have an actual chime throughout the house. Will it be a problem to skip that step?

Good question! Yes, you’ll need a chime puck if you’re going to power your doorbell using a transformer. If you don’t have an indoor chime, your alternate option is to stream your device to a Nest speaker or display. Google Nest Support should indicate whether you need the "chime puck" for the 2nd Gen Google Nest Doorbell if you are wiring the doorbell directly to your doorbell transformer without a doorbell chime. The purpose of the "chime puck" is to provide continuous power to the doorbell's camera without triggering the doorbell chime, so it would seem you would NOT need the "chime puck".

Thanks - I want to confirm - if I am wiring a Nest doorbell 2nd gen (wired) to our doorbell wires that have a sufficiently powered transformer will I need the “chime puck” to be attached to a chime? We do not have a doorbell chime.

It would be helpful if Google Nest Support gave the same answer when asked if a "chime puck" is needed when there is no indoor chime.

On this thread here, @janthadeus  says it IS needed.

On another thread (https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Cameras-and-Doorbells/Should-I-install-a-connector/m-p/382358), @Brad  says it is NOT needed.

Which is it?

I was confused about this too, but decided to go for it and installed the doorbell to our existing wiring (with a compatible transformer) without a chime puck. Instead we synced the doorbell to our Google home and phones and so far it has been working beautifully. I wish the google Nest instructions made that clearer, as they indicated that it would somehow be a problem if we didn't have a physical chime. So far it has been great and we receive notifications from the Google home without a wired-in chime.

MplsCustomer, I’m sorry for the confusion. The chime connector allows the chime's wires to deliver constant power to the  Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) and Nest Doorbell (wired) and protects your chime from damage. In addition, without the chime connector, you might experience chime buzzing or unexpected chimes.
