Nest Doorbell - Plugged in by main power for over 18months and now saying emtpy battery

Hi Everyone,

Looking for a bit of advice here, I have the newer version of Nest Doorbell which was installed 18 months or 2 yrs ago by a certified Nest engineer who did the whole thing from installing the cabling from the consumer unit box to running the cable and installing the camera onto the front wall of the house.

The camera has been working fine since it's been installed and never really gave me any hassle, I did realise at the start of using the camera that it was showing 86% battery power. Still, I never bothered too much as it was plugged into the main power supply so I never cared to query why it's not showing 100%.  However, my camera has gone offline saying its battery is empty on the Google Home app.

I had no power issues at home, no trip switch and the doorbell is connected to a chime it's working fine whenever you press it so there is power going to the Nest doorbell.

Does anyone have any idea what the reason for this problem is?

You could check your doorbell's transformer. There are numerous posts in this forum from customers who have had better luck with their doorbells after upgrading from a 16V 10VA transformer (which meets minimum requirements: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9247132) to a 16V 30VA transformer.  We did so a couple of years ago for our Nest Hello doorbells.

The Google Nest Doorbell (Battery) trickle charges when it is wired (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/11830989), so PERHAPS it's getting enough power to function but not enough to keep the battery charged), but that's just a guess.

If your transformer is more than adequate, you could try contacting Support starting with the link below, but it looks like you're beyond the 1-year warranty.

Hi, Thank you for your response. My current consumer box is 40yrs old
I know it does not have enough power as recently I installed a shower unit 8.5kw and struggled to work for more than 5mins before tripping the switch. So it could be the transformer/or the consumer box itself. The consumer is yet to replace next month when my new kitchen get's installed.
What I have done is charge the Nest Doorbell to 100% via the USB C and then switch off the consumer box for 10mins, and now it seems to recognise to be plugged in and working. It's only been 7hrs.
Hopefully, it will take me to the next month then, with the new consumer may be worth replacing my current transformer for better and up-to-date.
At least I know my next move and what to do next. I appreciate the help.
