Nest Doorbell Wired 2nd Gen Wont stay charged

My landlord had an electrician provide wires to the doorbell. I installed the Nest doorbell wired (Gen 2) and it displayed the Infiniti sign. After a couple days, the battery sign came up and it slowly drained. Then it would charge itself back up but it would never die. After a few months, I noticed the Infiniti sign would never come back and the battery started draining completely. My landlord has the electrician come out and we discovered that not enough power was getting to the bell. He installed a brand new line from the breaker in the basement and made sure it was not shared with my neighbors bell. The Infiniti sign came back and all was perfect for one day. Now the same issue is starting. The battery symbol is back and the battery in now on 15 percent. I checked my settings and had to change it back to battery saver even though I have a defined zone that only shows movement/people who come into our driveway and up my stairs. I don't understand why it's flipping back and forth between battery and wired or plugged in as it says. The power supply should be enough to keep this thing charged! Having to reduce the wake up and event recording has proven dangerous as we just caught someone hanging out at my door. He ended up stealing my package and smoking crack in the stairs below my porch. Luckily, my landlord was home and got the package back from him and had him arrested but the camera did not catch him coming into the yard or up my stairs. I only got about 8 seconds of him sitting on my steps and examining my package.

I've had the camera for a little less than a year and extremely frustrated. Trying not to switch to ring as everything else in my house is setup through Google Home and ADT.

You said the landlord installed a line.. what transformer is it connected to?  Nest Doorbell requires a 16-24VAC, 10-40VA rated doorbell transformer and chime. You may need to replace existing hardware.

We verified it was getting the correct voltage indicated. Pretty sure it's just coming out of the panel. it's not connected to the chime inside my apartment.

Hi @Mstytie,

I know that could be frustrating when tecnology doesn't work like supposed to, specialy when is your doorbell camera the one giving you those issues. To gain a clearer picture of the power fluctuations affecting your Nest Doorbell, I'd like to ask a few questions:

  • What is the voltage and amperage rating of the transformer?
  • How quickly does the battery drain when the doorbell is in battery mode?
  • How long does it typically take for the doorbell to fully charge when it switches to wired mode?
  • How often do you typically experience events that trigger the doorbell?
  • Have there been any recent changes in your home's electrical system or environment (e.g., new appliances, storms)?
  • Are there any error messages or unusual behavior in the Nest app related to the doorbell?

By gathering more specific information, we can narrow down the potential causes of the problem and explore appropriate solutions.

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,

Josh
