Nest Doorbell power issue

My (wired) Nest Doorbell (about three years old) went offline last night shortly after a visitor rang. It wasn't lighting up so this morning I took it off the wall. We checked to make sure the wires still had power, and they do, both at the transformer and at the doorbell outlet. I assumed maybe the doorbell just died, but when I plug it into a USB it comes back to life, perfectly fine. So the doorbell itself isn't dead, and the transformer didn't blow. Any thoughts about what could be wrong and what I should do next?

Hi, I'm an end user as well.  Believe it or not the Nest Hello doorbell has a battery in it that can fail.  And when it does your doorbell will not work.   This battery is NOT user replaceable (many people have tried).    When you plug in the USB for power this is just go get the camera initialized when you first get it so it can be connected to your WIFI network.

This happened to me about 3 years in and I ended up buying a used NEST HELLO from someone on Ebay and all is good.  I don't prefer the new doorbell battery at this time as there are still many features lacking compared to the previous NEST HELLO product.

If you want you can open a support ticket and speak on the phone with a Nest tech person.  Here is the link to get you started.

Good luck. And if you get it working please report back here and let us know what the problem was.

Thank you so much for your response! I may consider getting another one like you, but will this issue just happen again in three years? Or does this not happen to all doorbells? I’m skiddish because I had a google Home turn into a brick, so I’m worried this line of hardware is turning out to be bogus.

Hey there,

Thanks for bringing this up to me, I'd love to take a look into this for you. The first troubleshooting step that I'd recommend would be to restart your device. This process should keep all your settings, and reconnect it to the same Wi-Fi network. This might be helpful if it ever freezes, has connection problems, or isn't working normally.

Thanks for all of your help here, EmptyNester!

Best regards,
Brad

Thanks- realizing from this forum that these doorbells often die after a couple years was very helpful!

Nope I’m good. Google just doesn’t make reliable hardware!
