Nest Hello reset switch not working

I'm trying to install an old Nest Hello in a new location and I'm going through the install and it's stalling because it needs a factory reset. Makes sense, but I'm trying to follow the instructions and it doesn't seem to work. The pinhole button on the back doesn't feel much like a button to me - I don't feel any change when you put a pin in like I would expect. Holding a pin in doesn't do anything, even though I understand holding the pin in should make the light go out and come back as it restarts. Attempting to reset it by holding down the doorbell as well also doesn't seem to do anything (it just seems to ring it as if you pushed the button).

Right now it isn't physically installed, I was just testing it by hooking it up to an 18v wall adapter before I started drilling, and I have tried after reading another thread here plugging in the usb cable to charge it, but to no avail - the reset switch doesn't seem to do anything.

Should I be expecting to feel a button press when I put the pin in?
If the button isn't working right, is there any trick to maybe get it working (like if it's stuck or something?)

If the button can't work, is there any way to reset it using the USB port?
Anything else I can try, or do I now have a paperweight?

Thanks.
