Nest Outdoor Camera not connecting to live video when off of wifi

Keyz

My nest cam video live feed works great on my iPhone when I’m home and connected to the same wifi. But if I turn off wifi on my phone (even if I’m in the same room as the camera), it doesn’t work. Very frustrating, as one of the reasons I bought it was to keep an eye on the house when I’m not home. Any solutions?

On your iPhone, if you go to Settings | Cellular, is cellular data turned on for Google Home?

Yes it is.

Hi folks,

Thanks for your help @MplsCustomer, I really appreciate your post in the community.

@Keyz, thanks for reaching out to the Community. I am sorry that you are experiencing issues with your Nest Outdoor Camera Live video (feed) feature. But no need to worry, help is here.

Mobile Data Limitations:

When you switch to mobile data, the camera can establish a direct connection with your phone to stream the live feed, however the video stability will depend on so many factors and the initial connection may be limited.

Basic Checks:

Here are some basic troubleshooting steps you can try to fix live video issues with your Nest Cameras:

1. Check Your Internet Connection:

  • Strong Wi-Fi Signal: Ensure your Nest camera has a strong and stable Wi-Fi signal. Weak signal strength can cause lags or interruptions in the live video feed. Move the camera closer to your router if possible.
  • Internet Speed: Nest cameras require a good internet upload speed for smooth live video streaming. Run an internet speed test to verify you meet the minimum recommended upload speed (usually around 2 Mbps per camera, but higher for multiple cameras or high-quality video).
  • Restart Router and Modem: Sometimes a simple restart of your router and modem can resolve temporary network glitches. Power them off for 30 seconds, then turn them back on and wait for them to reboot completely.

2. App and Camera Status:

  • App Update: Ensure you're using the latest version of the Google Home app (or Nest app) on your smartphone or device. Updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements.
  • Restart Camera: Try restarting your Nest camera. The specific method might vary depending on the model.

3. Additional Considerations as you are using it remotely:

  • Remote Viewing Through Nest App (Limited): Even if you can't access live video, you might still be able to view previously recorded clips or snapshots from the camera through the Nest app on your phone using mobile data.
  • Wi-Fi Connection: Nest cameras are optimized for Wi-Fi connectivity for live video streaming.
  • Camera Model: The specific functionalities and limitations might vary depending on your Nest Outdoor Camera model. Check your camera's specifications or user manual for details on cellular backup options or remote viewing capabilities.
  • Cellular Network Strength: If you need to watch the live feed remotely, ensure you have a strong cellular signal for a stable connection.
